The return of the wherry Hathor to How Hill each May is one of those moments that quietly signals the Broads changing season.

Wherries were built to work these waterways — shaped around shallow water, narrow channels and moving goods through the Broads long before leisure boating existed here at all.

Hathor herself has a remarkable story, from her Egyptian-inspired interior and connections to the Colman family, to restoration and return to sailing after years out of use.

And no matter how many times you see a wherry on the Broads — first time or hundredth — it’s difficult not to stop and watch.

At the Broads Society, we want to stay connected with the people who care about the Broads — whether that’s through boating, wildlife, walking, local heritage, conservation, or simply spending time by the water.

That’s why we created Broadly Speaking — our monthly newsletter sharing more about what we’ve been up to, along with the projects, conversations and issues shaping the Broads.

The next issue goes out on Tuesday.

I’ll add the sign-up link in the comments for anyone who’d like to receive it.

One of the interesting things that came up at the Horning Boat Show wasn’t a single issue, but how varied people’s starting points are.

For some, access to the Broads begins with getting a boat in the water. For others, it’s finding a place to park, a path that’s easy to follow, or somewhere to stop without feeling in the way.

Those differences don’t sound significant on their own, but they shape how the Broads is used — and who feels comfortable using it.

We were at the Horning Boat Show this weekend, speaking to visitors about access to the Broads.

It was one of those reminders that people experience the Broads in very different ways — and what matters to one person isn’t always the same for another.

We gathered some really useful insights, which we’ll be sharing soon in Harnser and our next newsletter.

In the meantime, thank you to everyone who stopped to talk to us — it’s always good to hear directly from the people who use and care about the Broads.

By the end of April, the Broads starts to feel like itself again.

Tables by the water filling up. Boats coming and going. That sense that people are back.

It’s not just a change in season.

It’s the point where everything that depends on the Broads — from local businesses to the wider community — really starts moving again.

Late April on the Broads isn’t subtle - it' a reawakening

It’s hearing the chatter of birds in the reeds — not always seeing them, but knowing they’re there. Boats back on the water, and that moment where everything suddenly feels busy again after the quiet of winter.

You notice it in small ways — more people on the paths, more movement on the rivers, more life everywhere you look.

It goes from feeling like you’ve got the place to yourself… to realising everyone else had the same idea.

Have you noticed the change yet?

Access to the Broads isn’t just about getting there.

It’s about who feels welcome when they do.

Can you find your way easily?
Can you get onto the water?
Can you access a path, a mooring, a view — without barriers?

Because if the answer is no, then access isn’t really there at all.

We’ve just published a new blog sharing a Q&A with our Chair, looking at what access really means across the Broads — what’s working, what isn’t, and what needs to change.

It covers everything from boating and walking to disability access, tourism, and why this matters for the future of the Broads.

today is "Earth Day".

And while that can feel like a huge, global idea, it really comes down to places like this.

The Broads isn’t just somewhere to visit. It’s a working wetland — a habitat and a water system where wildlife, water and people all share the same space.

Water quality, wildlife, access and recreation — it’s all connected.

Clean water and healthy habitats don’t just happen. They rely on how the land is managed, the decisions that are made, and how we all choose to use and enjoy it.

Looking after the planet doesn’t start somewhere far away.

It starts right here.

It’s live… 👀

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’re really pleased to share that the Broads Society’s new website is now up and running.

It’s a big step forward for us — clearer, easier to use, and a much better reflection of what we do and why it matters.

You’ll find everything from events and updates to a stronger picture of how we’re working to support and champion the Broads.

Take a look and let us know what you think — we’d genuinely love your feedback.

Do you remember your first time on the Broads?

Not every detail, but the feeling. Being out on the water, the space around you, the way everything seemed to slow down without you even trying.

For some, that moment was years ago. For others, it was much more recent. But once you’ve experienced it, it tends to stay with you.

That’s why people care about this place in the way they do. Not because they’ve been told to, but because it’s become part of their own story.

Tell us your first memories of the Broads
