I’d be looking at what you want those four days to give you.

Proper sunshine? Cyprus or Malta.

Food, wandering and a city that’s still warm enough to sit outside? Seville.

Somewhere beautiful that works brilliantly out of peak season? Madeira.

Or perhaps you just want a really lovely hotel, a pool and absolutely no plans at all.

Most holiday searches start with a destination.

£1,000 can still give you plenty of options for an autumn escape.

I’d be looking at places like Malta, Cyprus, the Canaries and parts of Greece, depending on your dates and departure airport.

But I wouldn’t start by searching “holidays under £1,000” and scrolling through hundreds of results.

I’d start with what you actually want from the time away — sunshine, somewhere to explore, a lovely hotel, good food, or simply a few days doing very little.

Then I’d look at where your money works hardest.
