You’ve landed, queued at the rental desk, survived the insurance chat… and finally been handed the keys to your hire car abroad.

Before you drive away, these are the little things I ALWAYS recommend doing first.

Honestly, taking 5 extra minutes in the car park can save you stress, money and awkward disputes later on.

✔️ Video the whole car
✔️ Check the fuel policy
✔️ Photograph the fuel gauge on return
✔️ Keep the fuel receipt
✔️ Know what insurance you actually have

And please tell me I’m not the only one who’s driven around abroad in the dark trying to find a villa with a vague address and rapidly declining patience 😅

Hiring a car abroad can actually be one of the BEST ways to explore a destination properly. A little prep just makes it much smoother.

POV: You volunteer to organise the group trip and suddenly it becomes a full time job.

This is honestly where I can really help.

I organise the flights, hotels, transfers and all the moving parts. I set up a group WhatsApp so everyone has all the information in one place and everyone can pay securely through the app so one person isn’t left carrying the cost or chasing everyone for money.

And if something doesn’t go to plan while you’re away… you can all blame me instead of falling out with each other 🤣

Everyone talks about the Algarve… but I’m very interested in what’s quietly waiting beyond it in Alentejo.

The Portugal many people rush past might just be the most interesting part.

Think wild Atlantic beaches, stylish boutique stays, vineyard landscapes, whitewashed towns and that effortless laid-back luxury I’m always drawn to.

The kind of destination for anyone who has “done the obvious” and now want somewhere with soul, space and a story to tell.

Comporta has long been on my radar for chic beach escapes, while inland gems like Évora bring culture, history and character in equal measure.

Safe to say this is one region I’d love to explore properly… purely in the name of research of course.
