Highlights
Positioned just off the southern coast of India, the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka is a paradise of emerald-green rainforest and sugary sands. On the island's southwest coast, around 60 kilometres south of Colombo, Beruwala is both a beautiful and history-rich place to find yourself on this mesmerising isle. It was the landing place of the country's first settlement of Muslims. After acclimatising yourself to your new tropical surrounds with some snorkelling or diving right off the beach, check out one of the country's oldest Muslim mosques, the palatial Kechimalai, a half-hour walk along the sand. The highly peaceful Brief Garden, landscaped by former owner Bevis Bawa, is also worth a visit and lies nine kilometres inland.
