Bandagiriya

A turn from the Pallemalala junction along the Hambantota-Tissamaharama-Kataragama Road will bring one to the small village of Bandagiriya abundant in paddy fields, greenery and small cottage industries. Upon reaching the top, you can see below, there are ruins with columns protruding from the ground. It is said that Yahangala was a hallowed complex where many Arhats resided. May be these were their abodes long ago. Atop the boulder there are two stupas, made of bricks and on a raised platform- one tumbledown with just the base and the other still with its dome intact. Further, it seemed that the steps might have been cut into the rock long ago to reach the stupas. Reaching the ancient Bandagiriya Raja Maha Viharaya, you can see over the modern structures built in front before ascending the steps situated behind the buildings. Halfway through, the concrete steps were replaced with steps that were cut into the rock outcrop, noticeable only here and there. It is said that the temple complex is spread across an area of 25 acres and all the structures were once built atop the rock boulder. Believed to have been built by King Mahanaga.

Kandy Esala Perahera is a huge celebration of the Buddhist people in Sri Lanka. In the month of July this Perahara is being held and this annual procession is held annually to pay homage to the sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is house at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. Even in the 6th century BC, the Esala festival was held to commemorate the Budda’s Conception. The Esala is believed to be a fusion of two separate ‘Perahearas’ (processions). Which are the Esala and Dalada. Esala is considered to be the beginning of the raining season when the monks commence their Retreat and it was a ritual enacted to request the gods for rainfall. The Dalada Perahera is believed to a have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century. This Tooth Relic was taken in procession to Sri Lanka by princess Hemamala & Price Dantha.

The centuries old foot pilgrimage route is taken annually by the devotees of God Kataragama through jungle terrain and the vast saltern flats. This path goes through Kumana and Yala, the largest sanctuary in Sri Lanka. Usually Yala block two is closed to visitors who are not allowed to step off the vehicles even inside block one (open to visitors) except at two designated places. Walking through the sanctuary is only possible when it is open to pilgrims for a period of two weeks a year. Before the journey starts Hindu elders gives some advice to the group. You need to refrain from consumption of alcohol and adhere to strict vegetarianism before the pilgrimage. You need to respect nature and the environment. The path that supposed to go is very dry, barren and full of wild animals including the big three; the elephant, bear and the leopard. However the most dangerous was thought to be the wild buffalo.

Road to Jaffna is nothing but, vast open fields surrounded the sides of the road. At certain point you can see that the soil held a reddish hue, an attestant to the area being ideal for cultivation. As such some of the fields have already been turned into paddy fields and here and there you can see that people hard at work. When passing the Sangupiddy Bridge, the fields gives a way to arresting waterways. Next the road is framed with the Jaffna lagoon on either sides. The aquamarine depths of the lagoon shimmered in the sun and the color of the water there is particularly stunning. At some point you will be able to see reminiscent of a torri, a traditional entrance commonly found in shrines in Japan. However, upon closer inspection the similarities faded and the slabs of concrete skillfully placed to ensure the strength of the bridge.

Somawathiya Temple is located within the Somawathiya wildlife sanctuary. This sacred place was built by King Abhaya for his wife, Queen Somawathie to worship, it is said that the Stupa was located on the banks of the Mahaweli. In this place the King met Arahat Mahinda Thero (Mihindu Thero) and 60 other Arahats residing in the forest on his search for a suitable location for worship and reverence. The Stupa which is in the shape of a droplet, is said to enshrine the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha. A deep cleft has been left visible in the Stupa to expose the ancient brick of the orginal stupa as it has been renovated over time. Another interesting thing about this Stupa is that altars are within the stupa itself. There are thousands of devotees who come to this place to worship in every year. All of them have to climb the steps in single file into small enclosures that accommodate about four people.
