Pope Francis arrives in Sri Lanka on the morning of January 13th 2015 at the start of a week long Asian tour. In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Pope Francis said that Sri Lanka’s “natural beauty” has made it known as “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.”

“Even more importantly, this island is known for the warmth of its people and the rich diversity of their cultural and religious traditions,” he continued.

“It is my hope that Sri Lanka’s political, religious and cultural leaders, by measuring their every word and action by the good and the healing it will bring, will make a lasting contribution to the material and spiritual progress of the Sri Lankan people,” the Pope said during a welcoming ceremony at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Veak and Poson 2014

Vesak and Poson are the two main Buddhist religious festivals in Sri Lanka. During Vesak people celebrate the triple anniversary of Lord Buddha - his birth, his attaining of Enlightenment and his passing into Nirvana. This is also known as the Buddhist Festival of Light, colourful bamboo framed lanterns adorn the interior of every home and incredible luminous displays decorate the streets of most towns.

For Buddhists, Poson is second only to Vesak in terms of importance. Poson celebrates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, a festival of great historical and religious significance. In 2014 Poson was held on 12th June which was bit of a wash out since most parts of the country experienced rain. However, during Vesak on the 13 May people managed to experience the spirit of Vesak in abundance.
