New week, new letter…. welcome to M week!

This week: Malta, Marrakech, Maldives, Mexico, Madeira and Mauritius. History, spice markets, overwater villas, and one story involving a very frightening cable car (that one’s Friday, stay tuned).

As we head deeper into autumn, this is also the perfect time to start thinking about your winter escape, whether that’s Christmas markets, ski slopes, or somewhere warm to hide from it all.

Girlie trips, family trips, romantic breaks….. we’ve done London every way possible, and I don’t think we’ve ever gone without seeing a show. Non-negotiable.

Took the boys to the museums when they were little (that wide-eyed dinosaur-skeleton reaction never gets old). Took Si to La Gavroche for his 30th. Genuinely one of the best meals of my life. And one of my proudest London memories: North Devon Sinfonia won a place to perform in Hyde Park at the Proms. Our little corner of Devon, on that stage.

Couple of nights is always the right amount. Then home to Devon, obviously.

Malaysia’s answer to “I want beaches AND jungle AND I can’t choose.”

Langkawi does both. Rainforest right down to the shoreline, cable cars over the canopy, and some of the calmest, clearest water in Southeast Asia.

Exoticca have some brilliant bucket list tours that include Langkawi as part of a wider Malaysia itinerary, and Inghams do longer-stay beach options if you just want to plant yourself and not move.

Lake Garda. I still have mixed feelings about swimming in it.

Beautiful. Genuinely stunning. But so deep it gives me the ick a bit if I think about it too much. The boys had zero such concerns and were straight in off the boat, obviously.

Tried a mint ice lolly out there once. Would not recommend. August heat though? Unreal. Thank goodness for air con.

Would still go back for the views alone. Anyone else have a place that’s gorgeous AND slightly unsettling? 👇

This is a proper Santa Break to Levi, Lapland and it is every bit as magical as it sounds. It starts with a letter from Santa personally inviting your child to Lapland (be still my heart), then a half-day visit to Santa’s Elves Hideaway, a “flying” elevator, a private family meeting with Santa himself, his actual workshop, gingerbread baking, Elf School crafts, and a hunt for hidden goblins around Seita Stone cave. Plus snow tubing, reindeer meets, and a Festive Feast to top it off.

Disney World for grown-ups. That’s genuinely the only way I can describe it.

Went on my gap year, won $100 on roulette on my first go, and have been hooked ever since (the roulette table, not the gambling, mostly 😬). Painted ceilings, no clocks anywhere, and you genuinely lose track of whether it’s 9am or 3am.

The Bellagio fountains still give me chills thinking about them.

I’d go back in a heartbeat. Who’s coming with me? 👇

An overnight cruise stop turned into one of my favourite city memories. 🇵🇹

Colourful, friendly, gorgeous from every angle and cork absolutely everywhere (bags, hats, homeware. I did not expect a whole cork economy, but here we are).

And the pastéis de nata. Obviously the pastéis de nata. Still think about them.

Just spotted this and it’s too good not to share. Pension Kumbichlhof in Mayrhofen, Austria. Traditional, family-run, tucked away from the busy après-ski scene but still a short walk into the resort centre, and the Ahornbahn gondola is right on the doorstep so you’re on the piste in minutes.

L is for Lapland

Standing under the Aurora Borealis is one of those moments you don’t fully believe is happening, even while it’s happening.

We did the full experience: husky sledding, reindeer, a proper Fika stop to warm up (hot chocolate and cinnamon buns, correctly). Came home with a reindeer skin as a souvenir, which is still the strangest, most loved thing in our house.

If it’s on your bucket list, it should move up it. Genuinely.
