What’s even better than FlightPub? Nothing of course*, it was a trick question (*except maybe Phil Carr, he is better tbf, but concentrates on places, not pubs). But as you know, when we can’t fly for whatever reason, we try to keep you entertained with our fascinating Penguin trips. But that means either Gav or Pete have to drive, not ideal as they are both rather partial to a beer or two. But problem solved, when we switch to TrainPub mode & on this occasion visit Pete’s favourite place - Cardiff! 🤢
But where’s the link to the lovely & expertly edited video, I hear you all ask? Well I’m delighted to report, it wasn’t Pete’s fault this time, it was Gav’s om! As a go getting tech entrepreneur, he decided to innovate, using a Tik Tock app (whatever one of those is?). Result - first vid for the Traders Tavern completely failed to record. Second for the Rummer Tavern, didn’t record any of our witty words of wisdom & instead played music over the top. The third for the Old Arcade, again didn’t record any speaking & instead went out like a silent movie, minus any action/ entertainment value, but may go down well with deaf lip readers maybe? Not a roaring success story.
So with no videos to show you why we were in Cardiff, i can tell you it was to watch the rugby & our lucky knack of Cardiff surprisingly winning on each of our recent visits, the trend continued with them running out deserved winners against the Ospreys. Astonishingly this was Cardiff’s first win over them at the Arms Park since 2007 & now means they’ve got an excellent chance of making the play offs (where they will inevitably be knocked out in the first round).
Gav & Pete visited the Traders Tavern, a throwback unspoilt 1970’s pub, in a grotty looking office block. It wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste & I wouldn’t rush back if I’m honest, but a commendable survivor, for the time being at least. Then on to the Rummer Tavern, Cardiff’s oldest pub (established 1713 apparently) & haunted. I had heard beforehand, it’s had a very harsh & unsympathetic refurbishment, which is true, now a very generic looking, light, shabby chic/ minimalist sports type pub, we walked straight back out in disgust. Then on to the Old Arcade, which I have previously been rude about, calling it bang average/ overrated. But with low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised, with nice decor, interesting (mainly rugby related) sports memorabilia & a nice pint of Reverent James. I think my previous negative experiences there, were due to visiting on match days, when it gets insanely busy.
Then on to meet friends Chris Pembridge, Jason & his son Dylan at Curado (Tap Arse joint), for some munch before the rugby, very civilised. Jolly good day all round, maybe slightly less so for Chris, who’s an Osprey’s fan, but that’s his fault!
