Did you know?

Mary Ann McCracken (1770 - 1866) was one of Belfast's most remarkable social reformers. She devoted much of her life to helping the poor, promoting education, and campaigning against slavery. She spent many years supporting the residents of Clifton House, Belfast's original Poor House.

Her legacy lives on today through the work of historians, educators, women's groups and social reformers who continue to celebrate her contribution. She is commenorated by her bust in Clifton House, her statue at Belfast City Hall, and her grave in Clifton Street Cemetery.

Built in 1774 as Belfastā€™s original Poor House, Clifton House is the oldest working building in the city. Behind its historic gates lies more than 250 years of Belfast history, with links to social reformers like Mary Ann McCracken, the original ship builders of Belfast, including the Ritchie family, Belfastā€™s famous whiskey distillers, the Dunville family and many others who helped shape the city.
