Belfast has Peace Walls you can see. But did you know there’s also a wall beneath the ground that once separated communities?

When people visit Belfast, one of the things they often notice on a cab tour is the Peace Walls - the large barriers that still stand above ground in parts of the city, reminders of a difficult and complicated past.

But there are other walls in Belfast that tell a story too - including one that most people would never know is there.

Deep beneath Belfast City Cemetery, a section of an underground wall that separated Catholic and Protestant burial areas has recently been exposed, giving visitors a rare glimpse of a part of Belfast’s history that is normally hidden from view.

For our visitors from around the world, stories like this can offer a fascinating insight into the history of Belfast - beyond the famous landmarks and the walls you can see from the road.

On our Belfast cab tours, we visit many of the Peace Walls that are visible above ground. But this hidden cemetery wall offers a glimpse of another side of Belfast's divided past - one that is quite literally beneath your feet.

Known as the "Emerald Isle," Ireland's vibrant green landscape is the product of a mild Atlantic climate, abundant rainfall, and thousands of years of human activity.

Since the arrival of farming communities around 6,000 years ago, much of the island's original forests were gradually cleared and replaced with fields, pastures, and settlements, creating the patchwork appearance visible today.

The island has been inhabited since at least 8000 BCE and was home to a rich Celtic culture long before the arrival of Christianity. During the early Middle Ages, Ireland became renowned for its monasteries and scholars, earning a reputation as a center of learning during a period when much of Europe was experiencing political turmoil. The island later experienced Viking settlements, Norman invasions, centuries of English rule, and profound demographic changes following the Great Famine of the 1840s.

This image from NASA is especially unusual because Ireland is one of the cloudiest countries in Europe. The warm waters of the North Atlantic Drift add moisture to the atmosphere, while frequent low-pressure systems encourage cloud formation year-round. These same conditions that keep Ireland so cloudy and rainy are also responsible for its famously green landscape.

🇺🇸 Another visitor from the USA experiencing Belfast through the eyes of a local.

Today I had the pleasure of taking Robert from America on one of my Belfast Political Tours.

We visited the Peace Walls, crossed the interface areas between communities, explored some of Belfast's most famous murals, and discussed the history of The Troubles and how its legacy can still be seen in parts of the city today.

One of the most powerful moments was standing on Violet Street, where I showed Robert a photograph from the 1970s of a barracks occupying the street while a young girl stood nearby holding her teddy bear.
Looking at that same location today really highlights just how much Belfast has changed.

At the end of the tour, I asked Robert what stood out most to him.
His answer meant a lot:
"You brought it to life. This is an experience that everyone has to try."
As a local guide, that's exactly what I aim to do - not just show people Belfast, but help them understand the people, the history, and the remarkable journey this city has been on.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗯𝗼𝗹𝘆 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱’𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲.

1. Galboly is known as “The Hidden Village”
Tucked deep in the Glens of Antrim above Carnlough, it remained largely unknown to outsiders for decades.

2. It was once a thriving rural community
At its peak, around 60 people lived there in small stone cottages, farming the steep hillsides and fishing nearby waters.

3. The village dates back hundreds of years
Historians believe families lived in the area from at least the 18th century, possibly earlier.

4. The name “Galboly” means “The English Dairy Place”
The name comes from Irish Gaelic origins linked to farming and cattle grazing.

5. Most residents left during the 20th century
Harsh living conditions, isolation, and lack of jobs forced families to move away.

6. The village became completely abandoned
By the 1950s only a few residents remained, leaving behind empty cottages and ruins still standing today.

7. Its final resident lived there alone until 2013
A monk connected to Portglenone Abbey stayed in Galboly long after everyone else had gone.

8. Galboly has connections to Game of Thrones
The dramatic landscape and ancient atmosphere attracted filmmakers working in Northern Ireland.

9. It offers incredible views over the Antrim Coast
From the hillside, visitors can see Garron Point, the coastline, and the surrounding glens.

10. Locals once called it “Robber’s Village”
Old stories claim fugitives and smugglers used the remote location as a hiding place many years ago.
