I recently booked a trip to Barcelona for a client, and it instantly took me back to my own adventure there. It was January 2020โ€”pre-COVIDโ€”when a few friends and I decided to shake off the winter blues with a quick city break before heading to the slopes of Andorra. Back then, I made a promise to myself: every January, Iโ€™d plan a trip somewhere to escape the grim NI winterโ€ฆ but then, well, the world had other plans.

Barcelona is special. The city is effortlessly walkable, bursting with history, andโ€”lucky for usโ€” was bathed in sunshine despite being the middle of winter. We werenโ€™t there for long, but thanks to some friends who had lived in the city, we had a list of insider recommendations that made our short stay unforgettable.

Now, reminiscing about that trip, Iโ€™m thinking itโ€™s time to revive my January travel tradition. Thereโ€™s nothing quite like a dose of winter sun to shake off seasonal blues, and Barcelona is the perfect place to get your fix. If you're considering a visit, here are some of my top tips from that tripโ€ฆ

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Perikete - a tapas restaurant which opens onto the street, serves delicious Spanish tapas andย 

โ›ชBasilica De La Sagrada Familia - Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece. This tourist spot is well worth a visit. As are the rest of buildings showcasing Gaudi's work!

๐ŸŒณPark Gรผell - The sights over the city are beautiful and the park is lovely to wander around.ย 

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Brunch and Cake - We ate brunch here and I had grilled pineapple coated in coconut that I still dream about.

๐ŸนThere was a bar on a rooftop terrace overlooking the marina. It was the only time I've ever gone into a maritime museum for a drink but the vibes were chilled and the view of the sunset was ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ

There are huge amounts of things to do in Barcelona and I love that you have both the city and the beach to explore. Barcelona should definitely be on everyone's "to visit" list.
