I am currently getting organised for a trip back to Tanzania. It's 2.5 years since I returned from there to live in the Uk. Having been living in Kenya and Tanzania for 35 years, Africa is definitely my speciality from North to South. But there are always new experiences and I am delighted to be staying in a small mobile camp in Arusha National Park - where the northern circuit safaris start. This is glamping at its best with the night sounds carrying miles from mammals to birds letting you know you are not alone.

The small explorer ships go where no others can!

It is all in the name "Explorer".

They reach more remote destinations and go to ports that are inaccessible to the larger cruise ships.

Otherwise river cruises are a great option to see plenty and arrive straight into city centres.

Stress free, slow travel, each day a new adventure without having to pack and unpack.

Antarctica by cruise is one of those trips that stays with you for life.

Picture this: you’re out on deck with a hot drink, watching sculpted icebergs drift past like floating art. Then you’re down at sea level in a Zodiac, zipping between the ice — close enough to hear it crackle and fizz as it melts. (Fun fact: the small icebergs are called “bergy bits”. I love that.)

And the wildlife? It’s extraordinary. Friendly, curious penguins who waddle about like drunken waiters, as if you’re the day’s entertainment. Elephant seals lounging on the shoreline in a heap of whiskers and blubber. And above you, a constant swirl of seabirds gliding and wheeling through that bright, polar air.

If Antarctica is on your “one day” list, this is your nudge. Sailings are limited and the best itineraries are worth planning properly.
