Is the recent rain and thunder storms making you dream of a sunny escape? ☔

Now the weather has changed, September and October are a wonderful time to slip away for some sunshine and slower, less crowded travel.

Mediterranean warmth: Southern Spain, the Greek Islands and the Algarve are still basking in late‑summer sun, with warm seas and quieter beaches once the school holidays end.

Short‑haul culture breaks: Cities like Rome, Seville, Dubrovnik and Lisbon are cooler for wandering, with softer light, fewer queues and lovely terrace evenings.

October half term options: Consider Turkey, Cyprus, Canaries and The Red Sea to get the higher temperatures later in the year.

Cruising has never offered more choice. Beyond the familiar image of large ocean liners sailing between famous ports, there's a whole world of alternative cruise experiences designed around discovery, culture, and immersive travel.

Whether you're dreaming of remote polar landscapes, Europe's historic waterways, or hidden coastal harbours that larger ships can't reach, there's a style of cruising to match the way you like to travel.

The key is finding the one that's right for you.

Thinking of a winter sun holiday?

If you already know you like to escape the dark, cold months, now is the time to be thinking about and booking your January and February winter‑sun getaway.

These are my favourite long haul destinations for that time of year.

Sri Lanka
Golden beaches, tea‑covered hills and a real mix of culture and wildlife. Perfect if you want a few days exploring temples and countryside before relaxing by the Indian Ocean.

South Africa
Peak summer in January and February, with sunshine in Cape Town, vineyard lunches in the Winelands and the option to add a memorable safari.

Thailand
Classic winter‑sun escape: beautiful west‑coast beaches, warm seas, great spas and the chance to add a night or two in Bangkok for temples and rooftop cocktails.

Costa Rica
Dry season on the Pacific coast: ideal for wildlife lovers who want rainforest, volcano views, zip‑lining and time on wild, palm‑fringed beaches.

Maldives
Barefoot luxury at its best: overwater villas, white sand, turquoise water and slow, gentle days spent swimming, snorkelling and unwinding.

If you are already dreaming of escaping next winter, this is the perfect moment to start planning and securing your space for these in‑demand destinations.

Starting to think about Christmas?

There is still limited availability for this year or book early for next year on Festive River Cruises:

Let the smell of sweet gingerbread fill your nostrils in Budapest, along the Danube, before sailing off to explore the sights of Vienna. Or perhaps you'll enjoy a yuletide greeting into Germany while gliding down the Rhine, taking in the fresh frosty air and listening to tour guides tell the legend of the Lorelei, a maiden said to induce sailors in with her alluring melodies.
And marvel at the elaborate decorations bejewelling French châteaux and castles along the Seine before exploring Paris, the City of Lights.

Enchanting Rhine and Yuletide Markets River Cruise
The Danube's Imperial Cities and Yuletide Markets River Cruise
Magical Paris & Festive Seine River Cruise

Another lovely day at Make It Marple talking all things travel. Got some lovely enquires from people looking to do a safari in South Africa, winter sun holiday to Sri Lanka and a cruise around Vietnam and Cambodia.
After mostly working from home it is a nice change to get out into the community and chat to people.

Looking forward to the next one in September.

Are you thinking about your winter sun holiday?

As the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, there's something incredibly tempting about swapping coats and scarves for sunshine and warm seas.

But winter sun doesn't have to mean the same destinations year after year. Whether you're dreaming of tropical islands, unforgettable wildlife encounters, bustling cities, or beaches that stretch for miles, there are plenty of destinations that come into their own during the UK's winter months.

If you're already thinking about your next escape, here are five winter sun destinations worth adding to your travel wish list.

Tonight’s solar eclipse is a beautiful reminder of just how magical our world really is.

More and more people are now planning their holidays around celestial events like these: eclipses, the Northern Lights, meteor showers and remote dark-sky locations where the night is still truly dark and the stars feel close enough to touch. It is about those “once in a lifetime” moments you remember long after the sun comes back out.

Imagine watching an eclipse from a luxury eco-lodge in the desert, a boutique retreat in the mountains or a quiet island far from light pollution: warm drink in hand, expert guides on hand to explain what you are seeing, and your camera ready for that perfect shot.

These are the kinds of experiences I can help you build into a completely personalised holiday.

If tonight’s eclipse has sparked your curiosity about stargazing trips or other sky‑inspired adventures, I would love to chat through some ideas with you and see what might suit you best.

Last week has been non‑stop travel planning which is great.

I’ve been:
• Booking sunshine escapes to Crete and Marrakech
• Planning an amazing adventure to Vietnam
• Sending out documents for clients jetting to Majorca, Denmark, Mexico and the USA
• Jumping in to help other Travel Counsellors’ clients with last‑minute queries so their trips go smoothly

That’s the great thing about booking with a Travel Counsellor: if anything crops up or you have a last‑minute question, I’m just a quick email or WhatsApp message away.

Japan by Cruise !! 🏯🗾🚢

If you you love cruise and want to visit Japan then Azamara would be a great option.

Azamara specialise in destination-immersive cruising: longer stays in port, more overnights and carefully curated itineraries that really let you experience each place rather than just tick it off a list.

Their smaller, boutique-style ships mean a more personal level of service and access to lesser-known ports, with a relaxed, club-like atmosphere on board.

This is especially brilliant for Japan: Azamara’s longer port calls and overnights give you time to really explore temples, gardens, neighbourhoods and nightlife without feeling rushed back to the ship.

You can soak up the culture by day and still enjoy the comfort, dining and service of a premium cruise in the evening.

This is great value too as Japan is not a cheap destination to visit.

If you are curious about exploring Japan or other destinations on a more immersive, boutique-style cruise with Azamara, I would love to help you find the perfect sailing.
