“Without God, castles are nothing” 🏰 this is the Castleman family motto, featured here on this beautiful restored section of stained glass ❤️

As many of you may know, Chettle Lodge used to be The Castleman hotel and restaurant. The Lodge came into the Castleman family in the mid 1800s.

The Castlemans were bankers and railways builders, building the old line from Southampton to Dorchester known as the Castleman Corkscrew. Most of this line closed in the 1960s and now forms the Castleman Trailway, a 16.5 mile walking trail 🚂

Anne Castleman was the granddaughter of infamous Dorset smuggler Isaac Gulliver 💰 who was himself married to Chettle resident Elizabeth Beale.

So much incredible history for one little village!

When The Lodge was being renovated in the 1990s before opening at The Castleman Hotel and Restaurant in 96, this piece of stained glass window was found languishing in the stables! It was taken it to the works department at who restored it beautifully. ❤️

It is now inlaid in the reception desk in the entrance hall to The Lodge, backlit and glowing for all of our guests to enjoy! You can learn more about Chettle Lodge and Chettle village’s rich history on our website.
