1828 Mary Anning made a startling discovery.

A Flying Dinosaur a pterodactyl

On a bleak winters day in 1828 Mary Anning discovered the remains of a flying dinosaur,a pterodactyl (Dimorphodon). Mary Anning was already famous for her earlier discovery, at the age of 10, of a “Stone Dragon” (an ichthyosaur) but this find at the age of 29 was her rarest and the most important.

Only two complete Pterdactyles have ever been found on the Jurassic coast. The 1828 fossil found by Mary Anning and a second fossil of pterodactyl found in 1930 . Unfortunately,this fossil was destroyed during the Second World War, when a bomb hit a storage facility of the Natuaral History Museum, in London.

In 2021 during the winter a third Pterodactyl was found near the cliffs of Golden Cap. Mr Ellis, in late December was out collecting fossils with his son and noticed a strange angled piece of fossil bone showing, among a section of recently dislodged soft shale. A difficult and careful extraction revealed the wing of a Dimorphodon

The fossil was taken to the workshops of Steve Etches, a leading palaeontologist and Jurassic expert at his museum Kimmeridge. At the workshop the delicate procedure of cleaning and preserving this unique find was undertaken.

This startling find of a third fossilised pterodactyl has caused great excitement in the scientific community and is a unique and rare find from the Jurassic Coast,
