Rickshaw Run

Rickshaw Run The original tuk tuk adventure. No set route, just you, a 145cc rolling cake tin and thousands of miles of old school chaos. But he would have been wrong.

Take a three-wheeled glorified lawnmower, chuck in a couple of mates and throw it at India, Sri Lanka or the Himalayan mountains. Kneel before engineering’s highest life form. If God had made machines he probably wouldn’t have bothered with a Rickshaw. Essentially, it’s not a very good idea. They’re not very fast, they smell, they fall over when you go round corners and break down more often than

a 3 year old. A days driving feels like you’ve been sat on by an elephant. But somehow, all this makes them better. They are, unquestionably, the greatest vehicle on the planet. The only way to to cross thousands of miles of adventure, the very pinnacle of un-style and lost-grace. The Rickshaw Run was created by The Adventurists. We’re fighting to make the world less boring. Our planet used to slap us about the face-cheeks with iron fists of adventure every day. Maps had edges to walk off. Men feared the monsters that lurked in the deep. Whole continents lay undiscovered. But now, the entire surface of the Earth has been scanned by satellites and shovelled into your mobile phone, tagged with twattery about which restaurant serves the best mocha-latte-frappesh*te. Getting lost and in trouble is no longer an occupational hazard of walking to the market. It is an art-form. One we strive to perfect. We live to find ways to make the world a bit more difficult. To bring chaos into our over-sanitised lives. To create adventures where you don’t know what will happen tomorrow or if you’ll even make it. Because we think there’s no greater moment than those seconds as you leap into an abyss of uncertainty and disaster.

Yesterday 40 Rickshaws were released into the wilds of Sri Lanka. Not before our teams got to become familiar with their new mode of transport for the next week. There were plenty of smiles mixed in with looks of confusion as they realised what they were in for.

They smacked each other off a log during Kota Pora and a good knees up led to moves we have never seen before, and wish to never see again.

A few days ago, somehow, 41 teams and their trusty rickshaws wobbled into Leh in Ladakh. They've crossed 2000 kilometers and faced various mishaps along the way. Their route from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan up into the Himalayas traversed some of India's most formidably pointy terrain.

Celebrations and smiles were followed by plenty of drinks and some questionable dance moves, all while chatting over the slightly impressive thing they just did.

If seeing all of this has made you realise you really must drive a rickshaw across some big hills, sign up for next years runs here: www.theadventurists.com/rickshaw-run-himalaya/

Incase you missed it over on The Adventurists, we’ve sent 41 rickshaws to tackle Himalayas in their very own rolling cake tin.

They’ve been on the road for a few days now and are settling into life on the road brilliantly.

Breakdowns have been a key part to their adventure, alongside getting lost and stuck. Bloody marvellous we say.

Make sure you’re following theadventurists for more updates from all the other adventures happening right now.

Official navigation map released for the Rickshaw Run Himalaya. Start in the big pointy mountains. Finish in the sandy desert. Fill your chaos sandwich with an un-route of your choosing.

There's no set route, no back up, and a moderate-to-likely chance of some altitude sickness.

All photos taken by the splendid teams on the September '24 run - the next one kicks off in a few days' time.

“Take us back please.” Morgan, Julia and Deepa missing the chaos of the Rickshaw Run India they smashed back in January.

Here's what they said as they drove the length of India in a glorified lawnmower:

“What an Adventure this has been!

Daily ups n downs - and we’re here for all of it!”

“Driving our beloved Rotiti has been such a blast!

This was her first mountain pass and with a few breaks she made it.

We are truly enjoying this country and the way we are experiencing it on 3 wheels!”

“The people we meet in the journey are just incredible.”

“Mornings with Rotiti are just 🤌🏽

We enjoy the early morning as India only wakes up at 9am.. streets are empty, breezy air, first sun rays..”

“Just us, a trio of misfits, that just drove this beauty of a tuk tuk from North to South India for charity.

Would we do it again? !”

Still a few spots left on the next edition this September. Adventuring stupidity calls.

We're teetering on the brink of the Rickshaw Run Himalaya.

This July, 41 teams will coax their trusty 3-wheeled steeds across 2000 kilometers and up 3275 meters into the Himalayas. They launch from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan on 8th July and will wobble across the Finish Line about 12 days later in Leh, Ladakh.

We've released the only map you need for navigation on the Rickshaw Run Sri Lanka. This handy un-route suggestion recommends spending 50% of your week-long adventure going in the wrong direction.

We've got spots on the next edition in August.

The Rickshaw Run Sri Lanka: squash yourself and a couple of mates in a glorified lawnmower and adventure your way across the island. An island which is helpfully rammed with off road tracks, mountain roads, jungles, elephants, beaches, remote national parks, amazing food and some of the nicest people on Earth.

Some people might choose a couple of soothing days in a spa after driving a rickshaw 3,500km. Kyle & Chris decided to head to the Thar desert, eat some lamb curry and sleep outside.

"We decided to take our little rick west in search of some Rajasthani dunes. We found ourselves a guide through a local legend in Jaisalmer known as Doctor Bhang (not an actual doctor... although I never asked to see his credentials) and took the toaster oven out for one last hurrah.

"We loaded up on a few bottles of kingfisher, a couple of beedies and a bhang cookie or two to assist with the late night star gazing, courtesy of the good ol' doctor.

"Having two foreigners drive him through the crowded streets of India in a tuk with a MacGyvered throttle cable widened the kind eyes of our desert guide and left his knuckles white as a ghost. He eased up once Chris jumped on a bike with a friendly local and we left the helm of our noble steed in his hands. He was the guide after all.

"Some of my final days in India were spent here. Roaming the Thar by camelback, falling asleep in the sand by the soft orange glow of fading embers and touring the countryside in our little blue rickshaw.

"Lamb curry, feuding camels, chai with old men who all dawned unreal moustaches. I can feel the magnetic pull of this country drawing me back and these wandering feet are itching to move."

Kyle was one of the runners up in the photo competition a few years back.

Our Story

A 3,500km pan-Indian adventure in a 7 horsepower glorified lawnmower. The Rickshaw Run is easily the least sensible thing to do with two weeks. At each end of the Run is a party of earth shattering proportions but what is between them is all down to you. And luck - good or bad. No set route, no back-up, no way of knowing if you're going to make it. The only certainty is that you will get lost, you will get stuck and you will break down. It's just you and your mates in a wholly unsuitable vehicle, traversing the subcontinent enduring whatever s**t the road throws at you.
