Part 4: Designing a food gift box that can be sold in a retail shop comes with a LOT of regulations. And that stops us doing the thing we get asked the most online… to be able to choose what flavours of jam go in the box.

So unfortunately we’ve had to make the decision to stop making gift boxes for retail as we just can’t make it commercially viable. But we want our new online gift box to be stunning, so the next step is to find a local illustrator to design it for us. Stay tuned for part 5!

Nine years of jamming!! 🥳

I can’t believe it’s been nine years since I sold my first jar of jam at a Spring Fair in Balham. Here’s those nine years in photos:

2016: cooking four pans at a time in a horrible shared kitchen in Croydon (it was cheap and I promised myself one day I’d have my own place…)

2017: getting the keys to our very own kitchen space in 🔑

2018: every weekend spent selling jam at farmers markets (thank you and more)

2019: my favourite trade show set up

2020: giant jars!

2021: finding our very own (and very empty!) unit for our Bristol jam factory 🙌

2022: the early jam factory team (baby wasn’t much help)

2023: now we can get huge deliveries of chillies 🔥

2024: expanding our jam kitchen even further 😁

Our story

Hi! I’m Nicola and I started Single Variety Co back in 2016 determined to make the very best tasting fruit preserves and chilli jams that you can buy.

My mission is to make really delicious jams which you want to use in all sorts of ways!

It all began from my kitchen at home in London. Visiting nearby farms (not that nearby, it’s a good few hours to find a farm from London!) I tried lots of different varieties of fruit and back home experimented until I had developed the tastiest jams using the least sugar possible, each jam showcasing the true flavour of the fruit.

I also visited chilli farms and choose three very unique chillies to develop my three chilli jams- one mild, one hot and one super hot!
