Thinking about Goa? Here's what the weather actually looks like through the year ☀️🌧️

Goa is warm all year round, with average temperatures staying between 26°C and 30°C. The thing that really changes is the rain.

🌴 November to February: This is Goa's dry season and the most popular time to visit. There's barely any rain, plenty of sunshine and less humidity, so it's comfortable for long beach days, sunset dinners and exploring Old Goa and the spice plantations.

🔥 March to May: It's still dry, but the heat and humidity build. May is the warmest month, with an average of 30°C. It's a good choice if you love the heat and want quieter beaches before the rains arrive.

🌧️ June to September: The monsoon arrives in June, and July is the wettest month, with nearly 1,000mm of rain on average. The sea is rough, so swimming isn't advised, and many beach shacks close for the season. The landscape turns green, though, and the waterfalls inland are at their most impressive.

🍃 October: The rains ease off but don't stop completely. The countryside is still lush, and the beaches start getting ready for the season ahead.

✨ Best time to go: November to February for sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Go in March if you want dry weather with fewer crowds.

Every dry season, one of the world's biggest wildlife spectacles happens in Sri Lanka. And most people have no idea it exists.

It's called The Gathering. As the dry season takes hold in the north-central region, water and fresh grass become harder to find. Minneriya's ancient reservoir never dries up, so wild elephants from the surrounding areas make their way there to drink, bathe and feed. It's thought to be the largest known gathering of wild Asian elephants anywhere.

The best time to see it is roughly July to October, with August and September the peak. Go on an evening safari, when herds come down to the water's edge in the golden light, with mothers and calves close together.

Minneriya National Park sits in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, so it fits neatly into an itinerary alongside Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. It also happens when the south-west coast is in its rainy season, which makes it a great way to enjoy Sri Lanka at that time of year.

One thing worth knowing: not every safari operator is equal. A good guide keeps a respectful distance so the elephants can feed and drink in peace, and that's something we look for when we plan trips.

Vietnam is best known for lantern-lit Hoi An and the limestone karsts of Halong Bay, but its 3,000km coastline is just as worth your time. Here are five beaches to add to your trip 🏖️

🌴 An Bang: A short cycle from Hoi An's old town, this relaxed stretch of sand is lined with laid-back beach restaurants serving fresh seafood. Spend your mornings exploring the old town's tailors and lanterns, then come here for an afternoon swim.

🌊 Quy Nhon: This central coastal city has stayed under the radar compared with its neighbours. It has quiet bays, dramatic headlands and clear water at spots like Ky Co Beach, and new boutique stays are opening along the coast.

🛥️ Ninh Van Bay: Set on a peninsula near Nha Trang and reached by boat, this secluded bay is home to some of Vietnam's most indulgent hideaways. It's ideal if your plan is to switch off completely.

🐢 Con Dao: This remote archipelago off the south coast is mostly protected national park. Expect quiet beaches, coral reefs that are great for snorkelling, and sea turtles nesting on its shores during the warmer months.

☀️ Phu Quoc: Vietnam's largest island is perfect for winter sun, with dry, warm weather from around December to April. Head to Sao Beach for powder-soft sand, or the west coast for sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand.

Most places get one whale season. Costa Rica gets two.

Humpbacks from opposite ends of the world migrate to its Pacific coast to breed and calve in the warm water, which is why this is one of the longest whale-watching seasons anywhere.

From around July to October, humpbacks arrive from Antarctica. This is the bigger of the two, with the most whales around August and September.

From around December to March, humpbacks come down from Alaska and California. Fewer whales make the trip, but it's a lovely season to travel, as it falls in the Pacific's dry season.

The best place to see them is Uvita, on the south Pacific coast. Marino Ballena National Park is home to the Whale's Tail, a sandbar shaped just like a tail, and boat trips from here are the main way to see the whales up close.

The catch? The southern season overlaps with Costa Rica's rainy season, which is why timing and location matter so much. Choose your dates well and you could be watching humpbacks from a boat in the sunshine.

📍 Halong Bay: spend a night aboard a cruise among the karsts, with kayaking and cave visits along the way.

📍 Hue: Vietnam's former imperial capital, home to the Citadel, royal tombs and Thien Mu Pagoda.
📍 Hoi An: a UNESCO-listed old town that is lovely for slow days, cooking classes and cycling through the countryside.

Best time to go: November to April is the sweet spot for most of the country, although somewhere in Vietnam is always in season.

India: five icons, five landscapes, one extraordinary wildlife trail.

Few countries offer the sheer range of India when it comes to wildlife. From the dry deciduous forests of Rajasthan to the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh, this is a country where five of the world's most sought-after species can be found — each in a landscape shaped entirely around them.

🐅 The Bengal Tiger — Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan
Once a maharaja's hunting ground, Ranthambore is now one of the most reliable places on earth to see a tiger in the wild. Its open terrain and ancient ruins make for sightings that feel almost staged — though nothing here is.

🦏 The Indian One-Horned Rhino — Kaziranga National Park, Assam

For the more adventurous, Hemis in the Himalayas offers a genuine chance to track one of the world's most elusive big cats. Winter is peak season, when snow leopards descend to lower altitudes to hunt.

"When's the best time to visit Costa Rica?" Wrong question.

Ask "which coast?" instead.

Costa Rica runs on two separate weather systems. A mountain range down the middle means the Pacific and Caribbean coasts rarely have bad weather at the same time.

Head to Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio or the Osa Peninsula between December and April and you'll hit the Pacific's dry season — blue skies, minimal rain, classic beach weather.

Visiting September or October? Flip the script. The Pacific gets its heaviest rain then, but Puerto Viejo, Cahuita and Tortuguero on the Caribbean side are having their sunniest, driest stretch of the year.

Two coasts, two calendars, always a sunny option — you just need to know where to look.

You’ve heard of the Taj Mahal. But what about the “Baby Taj”? ✨

Sitting on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra, the Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah is smaller and quieter than its world-famous neighbour—but look a little closer and you’ll understand the nickname.

Built in the 17th century, the mausoleum is often described as a precursor to the Taj Mahal. Its elegant white marble, delicate lattice screens, intricate inlay work and perfectly balanced gardens marked a move away from the red sandstone that characterised many earlier Mughal buildings.

Commissioned by Empress Nur Jahan as a tomb for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg—who was given the title I'timād-ud-Daulah—the monument was completed years before construction of the Taj Mahal began.

The similarities are easy to spot, but the “Baby Taj” deserves more than a passing comparison. Its incredibly detailed decoration and more intimate scale make it one of Agra’s architectural treasures—and a beautiful addition to a journey through India’s Golden Triangle.
