Western Isles Wildlife

Western Isles Wildlife I've been living in the Outer Hebrides since January 2005 and started leading wildlife tours here in 2007.

It's still just me leading small groups but the destinations have expanded beyond the islands to include sites in Europe.

A few days helping out on the Lady Anne Wildlife Cruises; in some cracking weather allowed me occasionally to get the camera out and capture some of the wildlife you can find around Uist.

Our final full day on Midsummer / Mingulay tour wasn't sweltering like much of the UK but it was buzzing with wildlife. At least 9 White-tailed Eagles throughout the day as well as 3 male Hen Harriers were nice. An otter showed nicely in Lochmaddy whilst the Painted Lady caterpillars at Otternish were the first I've seen out here. The day finished in style with 4 Curlew Sandpipers and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Loch Paible.

Looking for Corncrakes in June is not recommended as the vegetation is starting to get tall enough to hide many a bird. Sometimes though they are hard to miss; especially when they call from on top of a garden wall!
