Might be shooting myself in the foot by sharing this… but for me, books are still one of the best sources of information-especially when it comes to local history rather than day-to-day events.

This book is incredible and is probably quite a rare gem now. It’s packed with illustrations, photographs, and fascinating information about Carshalton through the ages.

Being born and bred here, you grow up hearing stories, noticing historic buildings, and spotting little details in the streets that many people walk past without a second thought. A lot of the information I use for my maps comes either from my own knowledge of the area or from books like this.

If you’re interested, have a look at my “Research” highlights for more fantastic sources.

This is the old Barclays Bank in Wallington - I asked the builders yesterday: what will it be turning into. they told me they don’t know - but they do know McDonald’s plans were rejected and Marks & Spencer’s pulled out.

Love the old chiseled shop front sign - a shame this will be covered.

Do you know what this will be turned into?

In Carshalton High Street between Sainsbury’s and St Raphael’s - the door was open and at the top of the stairs all I could see was sky! Another of these ‘stairway to heaven’ doors is also in Wallington!

Both didn’t have obvious doors to anywhere - I like the idea they just lead to nowhere.

Carshalton Stories is delighted to announce that we will be part of Carshalton Festival 2026! 🍻

Our first exhibition of artwork will be displayed at The Palmerston - The Palmerston Pub on 📍Mill Lane was the first pub ever to hang the original Carshalton Pub Map on their wall back in 2021, so it felt right to exhibit there.

The Palmerston is located perfectly on a route that has many other exhibitors during Carshalton Festival AND the wonderful Carshalton Artists (CAOS) so drop in by have a drink and view Pub Map Artwork.

The Palmerston will have LIVE music during Carshalton Festival and is Location 10 on the Carshalton Festival Music Crawl map!

More information on the exhibition and The Palmerston will be released up to the opening of the festival- see you there!

The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially starts tomorrow, Thursday, 11 June 2026.

48 teams playing 104 matches over 39 days across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

All games will be shown on BBC or ITV - UK pubs can stay open as late as 2am during the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup under newly confirmed government licensing extensions. This policy is designed to help fans manage the many time zone differences.

🕒 Official World Cup Pub Licensing Extensions

The UK Home Office and Communities Secretary have authorised the following blanket extensions for the knockout rounds when England or Scotland are playing:

• 1:00 AM Closing: Permitted for matches kicking off between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM UK time.

• 2:00 AM Closing: Permitted for late-night matches kicking off between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM UK time.

• Beer Gardens & Outdoor Screenings: Local councils have been instructed to fast-track applications for outdoor screens and temporary pavement licences to maximise tournament celebrations.

So. Where will you be watching the World Cup locally? I’ve added some pubs that are our closest neighbours to Carshalton in Hackbridge, Sutton & Wallington.

I take photos of a lot of things, and sometimes I’m glad I do, because places change quickly. I originally photographed this stone plaque simply to try and decipher its inscription. Looking at it now, it has also become a useful “before and after” record, as the old toilet sign that was attached to it has since been ripped off.

The plaque in The Grove by is extremely weathered, and much of the inscription has been obscured by layers of paint and erosion over the past 150 years. However, enough of the lettering remains visible to piece together most of the text. The transcription below is believed to be around 99% accurate, with only a couple of first names still missing:

THIS STONE WAS LAID
ON THE 7TH DAY OF JUNE 1874
BY SIR HENRY WILLIAM PEEK, BART., M.P.
AND ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT
FOR THIS DIVISION OF THE COUNTY
R. L. CHARRINGTON, ESQ., CHAIRMAN
WILLIAM GREENHILL, ESQ., VICE CHAIRMAN
_____ SMITH, SOLICITOR AND SECRETARY
_____ HAYTON, ARCHITECT
CHARLES COLES, BUILDER

Considering its age and condition, it’s remarkable that so much of the inscription can still be read at all. Recovering the names and details from a plaque that has been exposed to the elements since 1874 feels a bit like piecing together a historical puzzle.

Do you know more about this stone? Or want to know more?
