💚 NEWS 💚
Today we are delighted to share the very exciting news that Whatley Manor has become the first Climate Positive Hotel in the UK.

This remarkable milestone underscores their commitment to urgent climate action and environmental stewardship by removing more carbon from the atmosphere than they emit each year, leading the way in an important industry sector that needs to step up and take greater responsibility.

The hotel team has spent 5 years maximising the reduction of its Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions and achieved Silver Certification in September 2022, then joined the .now NOW Climate Positive Programme to access extensive support and a selection of high integrity, climate action projects.

This is a huge achievement and one which their team are all very proud of 💚🌍♻️

Amid all the shouting at COP28, there is one issue on which there is a near-silence: the subsidies that governments currently provide for fossil fuels, writes FT columnist Gillian Tett.

Subsidies such as those offering petrol or coal to consumers and companies at artificially cheap prices are not just odd, but increasingly absurd. Leaders need to talk about the trillions of dollars of incentives behind our energy consumption.

How’re we doing on stopping the planet from slipping into climate disaster?

As world leaders arrive in Dubai at the world’s largest climate conference for tense talks on how to tackle the climate crisis, experts warn that “time is running out” to tackle the worst of its effects.

“We are living through climate collapse in real time,” the UN secretary general, António Guterres, has told delegates at Cop28, which comes after a year where words such as “unprecedented”, “extreme”, “record-breaking” and even “hellish” have become routine headlines when reporting on the climate crisis.

And while global heating is disproportionately impacting poorer countries — who’ve done the least to contribute to it — no country can think itself immune from catastrophe, said Simon Stiell, the UN’s top climate official.

“We’re now at the point where we’re all on the frontline,” said Stiell, speaking exclusively to the Guardian before the summit. “Yet most governments are still strolling when they need to be sprinting.”

But, while the headlines can seem bleak, we should not feel hopeless, scientists say. Researchers have urged a transition to a global economy that prioritises human wellbeing and cuts the overconsumption and excessive emissions of the rich.

“This year has seen communities around the world pounded by fires, floods, and searing temperatures – and the impact is devastating,” Guterres said. “Record global heating should send shivers down the spines of world leaders. And it should trigger them to act.”

Find out if this year’s Cop could force a course change for the world — as well as the 10 of the key ways the Guardian has reported on a world on fire —

- Most of us are practising a new form of climate denial. Collectively that has to change.

Old-style climate denial first pretended that climate change wasn’t happening, then that it wasn’t man-made. Today, Donald Trump is one of the last mainstream politicians peddling the old denial. It’s dying out, overwhelmed by evidence.

A small group at the other end of the spectrum lives in full consciousness of the potential catastrophe. This can be traumatic.

But a new denial is taking form. One is ‘delayism’ and the other is a misplaced faith that the shift to renewables will be painless.

The world is on track for a temperature rise of up to 2.9C above pre-industrial levels, the UN has found.

UN chief António Guterres said that keeping the Paris goal of limiting the rise to ideally 1.5C would require 'tearing out the poisoned root of the climate crisis: fossil fuels'.

The world now only has a 14% chance of limiting warming to the 1.5C target, according to UN analysis, even if countries honour all their pledges.

The Earth has already warmed by at least 1.1C.

‘We cannot address the climate catastrophe without tackling its root cause: fossil fuel dependence.

Fossil fuel emissions are already causing climate chaos which is devastating lives and livelihoods, and we are on course for far worse.

Yet, governments are on track to produce more than twice the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than would be needed to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In other words, governments are literally doubling down on fossil fuel production - that spells double trouble for people and planet.’

The upcoming climate conference must send a clear signal that the fossil fuel age is out of gas – that its end is inevitable.

We need credible commitments to ramp up renewables, phase out fossil fuels, and boost energy efficiency; while ensuring a just, equitable transition.

.now Overtourism has been around for decades, but what makes it so pertinent now is that whole communities are being affected, as well as natural landscapes. And while nature can’t speak out, people can. Residents in popular tourist spots have had enough, and their growing protests are a stark warning to local politicians that something urgently needs to be done. How much more tourism can the world take, and do we all need it?

Last year, NOW reported on over-tourism and what individual tourists can do to alleviate the problem since several governments and cities have begun implementing specific policies to help manage crowding. Amsterdam and Venice have imposed new taxes to help raise revenue for better tourism management; for example, New Zealand has decided to collect a fee of NZ$ 25 from each international visitor. But residents want far more, and the broader question of tourism’s ‘license to operate’ has also crept into discussions.

The future of humanity and ecosystems depend on pollination.

Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species rely entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination. Pollinators contribute directly to food security and are essential to conserving biodiversity.

However, intensive monoculture production and improper use of pesticides pose serious threats to pollinators by reducing their access to food and nesting sites, exposing them to harmful chemicals, and weakening their immune systems.

As a result, bee populations have been declining globally over recent decades. This in turn poses a threat to a variety of plants critical to human well-being and livelihoods.

Amidst a dangerous decline in nature threatening the survival of 1 million species and impacting the lives of billions of people, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a blueprint to halt and reverse nature loss.

- Not only have barren rivers brought key shipping routes to a standstill, greatly reducing the supply of food, fuel, and other basic goods to parts of the Amazon region, but scientists also warn low river levels risk a potential outbreak of disease.
