I took Alex for a guided walk on Exmoor last week. We had a blast and I forgot to check my photos when I got back. So pleased I looked before formatting the card before today's outing! Whinchat and male stonechat.

One of two tawny owls that roost in an oak tree just outside our town. This is the pale morph the other is a darker reddy brown that reminds me of the ploughed soil of mid Devon. Im not sure how long the birds will remain in this spot but they do seem quite content here.

I've watched this girl for four years now. I patiently wait, sometimes for four or five hours, sometimes she appears within minutes. I lie on my belly in a hide, on a kip mat, it's ok, not exactly comfortable but worth it. I don't know how old she is, but remember her first visit in 2021 when she had two boisterous cubs in tow! She is getting on a bit now, her teeth are worn and she has what could be a cataract in her right eye. I'm pleased to say she has another two cubs this year (they come out a bit later and are still small). Long may she continue. It certainly a great pleasure to see her most evenings and into the night.

I will be at Roborough Rewilders, Roborough Fields today. Come along and see nature recovery in action on your doorstep. I will be doing a short introduction on wildlife photography and accompanying Jack Smellie on an 'invert' hunt!. It promises to be a great day! See you there!

Lovely to see these two out in the day. A nice bit of foxy interaction too. Are they siblings? Trail cam footage Browning SpecOps Edge. Ground spike and ballhead supplied by Kevin Keatley, Wildlife Watching Supplies

A few seconds, caught on trail cam, of new badger cubs having a bit of rough and tumble!

I eventually came across the sea lampreys on the Little Dart. Four of them, moving stones to prepare a gravel bed for spawning. A wonderful sight. About 1 metre long. They live for about 5-8 years. During migration they don’t feed and die soon after spawning.

It's always fun capturing puffins in flight. Evening at the Wick is a good spot to practice. It's a lot quieter than the daytime too when there are a maximum of 250 day visitors. One of the benefits of staying on Skomer is there are only 16 overnight guests.

One of Skomer's smaller resident breeding birds. This male was proclaiming its territory on top of a broken thistle stem. They are one of my favourite small birds, named appropriately as their call sounds like two stones being tapped together.

What a privilege to see a Manx shearwater, held here by Rob, the Skomer visitor officer. Manx shearwaters leave their burrows at night to avoid predation, spend days at sea fishing, then return to their burrow at night again. This chap landed in Rob's back garden by mistake. Rob will put it in a special man made burrow and it will be released at night and hopefully reorient itself and find its original home soon.

It was starting to seem that short eared owls would be my nemesis bird! I was always in the wrong place searching for them. Our friends on Skomer started joking, "where are you going Nick? we will go in the opposite direction" "Its behind you!" etc. Then on the second day YES! I had four separate encounters, although at a distance, of these wonderful daytime hunting owls. I can't imagine how difficult hunting must be for them as they are constantly harassed by gulls.
Here's a not particularly great shot, but i'm so pleased I saw them!
