🍎 Apples, pears, Morris dancers and c***r. Did I mention the c***r? 🍻

This Sunday was the annual Apple Festival at Blackmoor Estate, and it’s one of those wonderfully British country events that we absolutely love!

It’s a celebration of all things countryside, with rather more going on than you might expect from a humble apple!

🍎 Apple and pear tasting and of course for sale. If you’ve got a particularly delicious apple growing in your garden but haven’t a clue what variety it is, take one along and let the experts identify it.

🌿 Traditional country crafts, including trug making and willow weaving, alongside stalls supporting our wildlife from the Dormouse Association and the River Trust and hedgehogs.

🦇 A chance for us to buy yet more bat boxes (because apparently you can never have too many!) and have a good natter with fellow beekeepers at the beekeeping stand.

🧀 Then there’s the food! Artisan cheeses, homemade chutneys, smoked fish, fudge, delicious things from countless food stalls and naturally apple and cherry juice.

💃 Morris dancing, arts and crafts and plenty of good old-fashioned country entertainment.

And c***r. Did I mention the c***r? 🍻

It’s just the sort of event where you pop in for an hour and somehow find yourself still there several hours later, clutching a bag of cheese, three jars of chutney, another bat box and possibly a slightly unnecessary willow basket!

One of the things we love about living in this part of Surrey is discovering these lovely local traditions, and it’s exactly the sort of thing we enjoy sharing with guests at The Little House.

Who’s going to be there next year? And more importantly, will you be there for the apples, the crafts or the c***r? 🍎🍻

Every family has a black sheep… ours just happens to have feathers. 🖤🕊️

For the past few weeks, we’ve had a rather unexpected addition to the dove flock at The Little House. A black racing pigeon has moved in and, judging by how settled he looks, appears to have absolutely no intention of continuing his journey.

Amongst our flock of bright white doves, he rather stands out as they perform aerial formation displays in the sky. He’s quite literally the black sheep of the family. 😂

But hospitality at The Little House extends to all sorts, and if he’s decided this is where he’d like to retire from racing, who are we to argue? (He has no rings or marks so I can’t return him from whence he came).

Of course, if he’s staying, he needs a name, like all our residents.

Any suggestions? I feel it needs to be something suitably speedy… although given he’s apparently given up racing in favour of a comfortable life in Surrey, perhaps Lester Pigeon might be slightly optimistic. 😂 Retired Roger? Mo Feather? Pigeon Impossible? Wing Diesel?
You’ve not disappointed in the past, so over to you lot for suitable, and possibly unsuitable, suggestions 😁

A little bit of sea air, a pretty harbour and a very good lunch… sometimes that’s all you need. 🌊

One of our favourite little escapes from The Little House when we fancy a change of scenery is Bosham, a gorgeous picturesque village tucked into Chichester Harbour.

We popped over recently, with Fig of course, and managed to combine a wander with one of life’s necessities… lunch! 😋 We had a delicious meal at the dog friendly Anchor Bleu, right on the water, which is pretty much the perfect spot for watching the world go by.

Bosham is one of those places where you can happily spend a few hours without needing a great plan.

Have a wander around Holy Trinity Church.
The little waterside church has a fascinating history, including the rather wonderful legend linking King Canute with Bosham. And with the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition currently making the news, it feels particularly topical to visit a place with its own connection to the tapestry and the story of King Canute.

🌊 Walk along the shoreline.
Follow the harbour edge and, if the tide is right, you can cross the natural causeway. Just check the tide times first because the road can disappear under the water at high tide. There’s something rather lovely about watching the boats, birds and changing light across the harbour.

🍦 Browse the little shops.
Bosham Walk is full of independent shops, crafts, gifts and local treats. And yes, there is a sweet shop and ice cream involved, so obviously this is important research.

🦀 Watch the boats or go crabbing.
The quay is a great place to watch the sailing boats coming and going, or embrace your inner child and have a go at crabbing.

And then there’s the simple pleasure of sitting beside the water with a coffee, watching the tide come in and wondering why you don’t do this more often.

It’s only 45 minutes from The Little House, making Bosham a lovely addition to a countryside stay here if you fancy swapping woodland walks for a bit of sea air.

🍇 Well… this escalated quickly.

When we planted our grapevine, the garden was still very much in its infancy. We certainly weren’t expecting to be standing here a few years later contemplating what appears to be our very first grape harvest.

And look at them! 🍇

Which obviously leads to the next perfectly sensible question…

Should we be making w**e?

I mean, we’ve already got the grapes. We’ve got the countryside. We’ve got the rustic setting.

All we need now is a rather grand French name.

Château Petite Maison?
Maison de Little House?
Or perhaps, given the size of the operation…

Château Très Petite Château. 😂

The sensible part of me is wondering whether we should make grape juice, jelly or just eat them.

The other part is already picturing a little bottle labelled:

Vintage 2026
Hand harvested in rural Surrey
Limited edition. Extremely limited.

So, over to you…

What should we do with our first ever Little House grape harvest? 🍇

And be honest… are we being wildly overambitious with thoughts of Château Petite Château, or is this exactly how every vineyard empire begins? 😂

How far would you drive to feel like you’ve really got away?

Sometimes you don’t need a week in the sun.

You don’t even need to go particularly far.

You just need to leave the noise, the emails, the endless jobs and the everyday routine behind for a few days.

An hour or so down the road and suddenly there are trees instead of traffic, birdsong instead of notifications and nowhere you need to be.

You can walk hand in hand through the woods, sit quietly and watch the wildlife, eat somewhere lovely, curl up in front of the fire and actually have time to talk.

Time together without one of you checking the clock.

Three days might not sound like much.

But when you spend them somewhere that makes you slow down, breathe properly and remember why you enjoy each other’s company, it can feel like you’ve been away for a week.

So perhaps the question isn’t how far you need to travel.

Perhaps it’s how badly you need to get away. ❤️
