It’s 🍄 Fungi Friday!

This week’s fungus is Amanita rubescens — the Blusher.

And it’s got a rather lovely party trick…

When the flesh is bruised or damaged, it turns pinkish-red, giving it its common name. Look closely and you can often see that rosy colouring where the mushroom has been nibbled, knocked or handled.

It’s a fairly chunky woodland mushroom, usually with a pinkish-brown to reddish-brown cap covered in pale, wart-like patches. Underneath, the gills are white, and it has the classic Amanita features of a ring on the stem and a swollen base.

But here’s the important bit: this isn’t one to casually pick and eat. It is edible only when thoroughly cooked, but it can be poisonous when raw or undercooked, and Amanita mushrooms include some seriously toxic species. So unless you are absolutely confident in your identification, admire this one where you find it. 🍄

I love how fungi can look almost ordinary until you start noticing the little details. That blush is a pretty good example of why it’s worth slowing down and taking a proper look.

Have you spotted a Blusher this autumn?
