Join us for our 50th Birthday Weekend on 12th-14th September! 🥳

There will be lots to see and do around the railway as we celebrate the incredible achievements of our dedicated team over the last half century.

Full timetable to follow soon. Unfortunately a problem with Austin 1’s boiler means she is sadly likely to be unavailable, so we are in the process of shifting loco allocations around.

Liberty hall walk.
It's not just about the trains at station view, there are so many walls without using your car. This circular walk straight out of the door offers stunning views as you climb above the forest and you can see the Clwydian range, The Berwyn mountains and the peaks of Eryri on a clear day. It really doesn't matter that the " hall" ( an old shooting lodge) is just a pile of stones

As autumn draws in, you still can't escape the beauty of the Dyffryn Dyfdwy ( Dee valley). The light steams through the windows of the diesel railcar and the changing colours of the trees make for stunning views. As a child in the 60s I travelled on a railcar going to Wales for the day, and always liked that you could watch the track ahead through the front windows and see the driver. There's three railway weekends left including full steam weekends to choose the year programme in November. It's a just see on a day like this

Great fun on a sunny September Saturday at Corwen;
A "steam punk" weekend here and in Llangollen. The atmosphere was great: there were displays and stalls here at Corwen station, and the steam train together with both towns were rammed with happy faces all in costume. An annual event now that's sure to get bigger each year.

Llangollen railway: Corwen terminus station, viewed from Station view cottage.
Even when the clag hangs low over the hills on a wet autumn day, it's hard to hide the beauty of the Dee valley. The steam and smoke from the loco hang low above the train as it pulls out, making a very moody view

A GRAND DAY OUT
On possibly the warmest day this year so far, we took the early train to Llangollen and walked up to the ruined castle, Dinas Bran, which dominates the hillside above the town with fine views all around. It's a steep walk but well signposted and well worth it. Took us 1½ hours round trip at a stroll including plenty of time to take in and photograph the views. Back in the town we enjoyed more of the weather with views of the river and the railway station from the deck of the Cornmill with a beer. When the train came in we caught the last run out, getting off at Carrog to take in the views from the terrace at the Grouse, before returning home by bus..

ACCESS AND PARKING FOR ERYRI (Snowdonia) and YR WYDDFA ( Snowden summit)
For our guests and anyone else. looks like a great walking weekend.

Eryri can be very busy particularly at weekends and in holiday season: accessing the the popular starting points and parking can be a problem, but with a little pre- planning you can save time, hassle and money.
Firstly, familiarise yourself with the sherpa bus service, download the little map, timetables and maybe the app (google Sherpa y’Wyddfa)
Yr Wyddfa from Pen y Pass - The most popular start point: it’s the first one many people reach from the A5, it’s the highest (offering shortest summit routes), and it’s the only logical place if you want to access the Crib Goch ridge, or complete the full horseshoe.
Parking MUST BE PRE-BOOKED IN BUSY SEASON (link below), it gets very busy here, and the whole walk can feel like a procession.
If you must start here I’d suggest you use the Sherpa bus service: from Betws y Coed (25 minutes from here) and get the hourly service in and out, or : park at Llanberis and walk up from here or take the (4 per hour ) bus to Pen y Pass. You then have the option of a return route on foot to Llanberis, (a longer but easier descent), and a good idea if you start a bit later than planned as you won’t be rushing back to PyP to get the last bus.
Pick a different route up Yr wyddfa
After Capel Curig where you leave the A5, don’t turn up the hill towards PyP, instead continue on the A498 to Nantgwynant. Parking here is just turn up and pay and display, but please go early on busy days. The Watkin and Rhyd Ddu paths start here and split so you can complete a small circular walk. Much quieter and arguably more picturesque than the “Tourist” paths from PyP but, note there is a short scramble to the summit (easy with no exposure).
Pick a different mountain on a busy day
Away from Eryri there’s 11 other 3000ft peaks in Snowdonia, going to different points and using the sherpa bus you can access the less visited peaks more easily.
Below 3000ft, and choice is varied: my favourites would be Cnicht together with Moelwyn mawr and Moelwyn Bach returning via Croesor village; or Aran Fawddwy (best views in the hole of Eryri IMO and only half hour drive from Station view cottage). Free parking, and you’ll virtually have these mountains to yourself. For further info on these or any other routes in eryri, please ask me.
So my advice would be to avoid the main “honeypots” on busy days, but that’s not always possible, so hopefully this will help.
