Stop 6 - Verona

Our final stop on this trip, Verona. This was our first visit to the city and arriving here early in the day we were delighted to find our room ready for an early check. We dropped our bags off in our 2 bedroom apartment, 300 metres from the centrally located, Roman Arena. After a brief moment of rest we set about finding a cafe for some brunch and coffees near the aforementioned awe inspiring, Roman Arena. Using the Verona Card, we had 'skip the line access' to the arena and what a place this is. Older than the Colosseum, this place has been providing entertainment of one form or another for 2,000 years. Currently, it's the Opera Rigoletto that was being performed to sold out crowds, although Antonia & Spence somehow managed to get tickets at late notice. They both loved it and the subtitles helped them follow the story 🙂 Verona is, like many old Italian cities, rather beautiful, it's easy to get around on public transport (Verona Card) and has plenty to see and do. It's also famous for being the home of Romeo & Juliet. We had a look around the medieval house of Juliet and the famous balcony which was very popular with the visitors. A bit crowded but interesting nevertheless. We also did another E bike tour of the city and got to see a very large amount of the sights and used the ebikes full potential rather than the funicular to get to the highest point of the city. The viewing point was very special and the cafe at the top was just what was required after a morning's tour.
If you're looking for a romantic few days away in a beautiful city with culture dripping from every corner, Verona is your place. Just beautiful.

That's the end of this summer's tour. Truly memorable and many spectacular things to appreciate. We live in a beautiful world and it's a real privilege to be able to go and view some of these things.

Stop 5 - Desenzano del Garda

This very charming town is easily accessible by train from Verona (as we did) and is situated at the southern end of Lake Garda, ideally located for exploring the many charms the lake has to offer. Our hotel was blessed with incredible views as we directly overlooked the port, set against the backdrop of the lake and mountains in the distance. Again, the melt water from the mountains gives the colour of the lake, a magical quality that almost looks unreal. It's not, and no filters were used. Staying in Desenzano was meant to provide a little bit of a breather on our itinerary which it managed to do in style but Desenzano itself was busy (Italian holidays) without being packed and always had something going on, be that huge markets or festivals. It was also a great choice for just whiling away time in a local bar or lounging on the nearby beach. Much credit must go to the travel agent 🙂
We travelled to Bardalino & Garda on the eastern side of the lake by one of the frequent ferries and also hired bikes for the day, which given the generally excellent cycle paths, made for easy journeys. There are spectacular antiquities to be viewed of course everywhere, including the stunning nearby town of Sirmione and the beautiful port of Peschiera. So much to see and never enough time but I never fail to leave in awe of the history that we have on our doorsteps.

Six relaxing days here in Desenzano and Antonia's birthday celebrations made for a memorable time in this wonderful area.

Stop four - Cortina d'Ampezzo

Another famous ski resort, known as the Queen of the Dolomites. Cortina hosts many winter sports and will be hosting the 2026 winter Olympics as the amount of building going on here testifies. Another great base for us to explore the area and mountains around Cortina. A very high end place again with truly spectacular surroundings made this so memorable. We loved this region, even after being wowed by the Alps in other places. The Dolomites are unique, they have a distinctive appearance and capture the light in a way that I've not seen before. If you come, you won't be disappointed with what you see and experience here. Top tip for the Dolomites, if you're here for a period of time, buy one of the passes for several days that allow use of all the lifts in the region, not the cheapest, but you'll save a fortune if you use several of the various lifts over a few days.

Next stop - a chance to take breath and relax by Lake Garda, in Desenzano del Garda.

Stop three - Selva di Val Gardena

This name may be familiar to many as one of the top ski resorts in Europe, regularly hosting the Ski World Cup. Nestled in the heart of the valley, and surrounded by mountains, whichever way you look you have a beautiful view to look at. Selva sits at an altitude of 1500m, its surrounding mountains considerably higher. These mountains of course can be accessed by one of the many hair raising cable cars. I struggle with heights but managed to overcome this somewhat and get myself to the top a few times. The reward is views beyond comprehension in many ways. We enjoyed hiking back down the mountains, (stopped off for Aperol on the way down) and my legs are still feeling the effects of it. We got kind of bored of saying 'look at that view' because we were saying it constantly as there is always something breathtaking to look at. There's much more to come from the Dolomites for us as we travel to Cortina d'Ampezzo next, but I can't recommend this region more highly. It's just truly awesome. I'll let the pictures do the talking but understand, that whenever you see one of these places in person, you see much much more and experience an emotional aspect which images don't normally convey. Travel, experience and enjoy.

Stop two- Bozen/Bolzano

Not so well known generally in the UK, this charming city has two names as it's been ruled by Austria and Italy (now Italy) at various times. Everything is written in both languages here and the blend of culture and cuisine makes this along with the rest of the South Tirol, a unique blend of the two cultures. Bolzano is known as the gateway to the Dolomites, the very distinctive part of the Alps that dominate this region and attract millions to view their splendour. The South Tirol is one of the most affluent areas in Italy, as the endless designer shops in Bolzano certainly testify. This is a city, with many beautiful squares and charming restaurants, that effortlessly serve plentiful glasses of Campari and Aperol keeping the locals and visitors alike, very satisfied. What's not to like!

Bolzano also has a world famous resident, his name is Ötzi. Ötzi is man 5300 years old, who's mummified body was discovered by hikers in a glacier in 1991. He is the oldest mummified human to be found in Europe. After his discovery, his body went through many scientific tests to ascertain as much as possible about him, including of course, his age. They also discovered, something much darker, in that he'd been murdered by an arrow shot at him from behind. With the discovery of the arrow head buried in his body, a full autopsy and crime scene were established which found many fascinating findings from the area where he was murdered. From this one discovery, a whole museum was founded with so much detailed information about Ötzi and the life and times of people living back then, it's really quite incredible. Ötzi himself now rests in a cryogenic chamber and you're allowed to see him and say hello through a small window when it's your turn in the queue. Given how old Ötzi is, he looks pretty good, you can even still see his tattoos!

We also visited the utterly captivating town of Merano, a short 30 minute drive from Bolzano and took the chair lift up to the top of the mountain for drinks and cake. It's difficult to capture the sheer beauty in these places with pictures as they just don't compare to seeing it in person, but for now, look at the pictures and if you like what you see, add these places to your list. Breathtaking scenery doesn't really cover it!

Innsbruck -stop one

Our first stop on this family holiday was Innsbruck. My first time here after several attempts, the city that bills itself as the heart of the Alps with good reason. The airport seems like it's in the city centre, so close is it to everything. We weren't blessed with the best weather for viewing miles of Alpine scenery whilst here but we escaped heavy rains and literally soared above the clouds to the 'Top of Innsbruck' the mountain Seegrube at 1905 metres. At the summit of the mountain visibility changed with every minute as clouds moved and this experience, much like all the other mountain experiences we've had, was magical and awe inspiring. There wasn't going to be a way to avoid the Swarovski museum whilst we were nearby, a short hop outside the main city to what I have to admit, I found more interesting than I expected. More of a gallery of art using Swarovski crystal, some of the pieces were really beautiful and thought provoking along with various examples of where they'd been used in some of the biggest movies ever made. After escaping with my wallet intact, we proceeded to max out our Innsbruck card (great value and includes absolutely everything you need to see) with palaces, churches, museums and galleries. Two days not enough, a really stunning city that is quite literally in the heart of the Alps. Loving our first stop in the Tirol region and excited to see more. Next stop Bozen/Bolzano, gateway to the Dolomites.

24/07/2025

Another family adventure.

Yes, it's that time again, when we do our very best to mimic the Griswolds in some of Europe's most beautiful places.

This trip takes us to 6 different locations in 2 different countries, travelling by air, train, car and boat, so really to quote another film, planes trains and automobiles plus a boat or two. Many months ago when we had our family holiday discussion (over a Chinese meal) the Dolomites were suggested (Spencer) and agreed upon, so this itinerary incorporates that plus lots more.

As always, if you're interested, please follow my updates and if you'd like to do something similar, this route or another that you have on your mind, get in touch.

This itinerary looks like this, starting with our flight to Innsbruck today.

📍Innsbruck - then train to
📍Bolzano/Bozen - then car to
📍Selva di Val Gardena - then car to
📍Cortina d'Ampezzo then car & train to
📍Desenzano del Garda - then train to
📍Verona - then flying home

Lots to see and do, tough family clients to keep happy and memories made forever which is what it's all about really.
