Mapping a Welcome to Fife
Our Linen Stories currently on display in the Community Gallery of Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries includes an opening section that explores the intimate relationship between mapping and linen.

Check out linen backing on Bartholomew's, the wonderful Fife Museums OnFife designed by Mint Modern Creative and the satellite mosaic map, reminding us that we all share the same seas...

Who doesn't love a map?
We're grateful to Chris Fleet and team at the National Library of Scotland for their support over the last 10 years including with this years 1856 OS Map of Dunfermline showing just how much tge town was all about flax fibre and linen

For FlaxFest24, we're calling on visitors to help us continue our Citizen Mapping project...Place names in Fife relating to linen? Then, now and next... in Dunfermline alone there are examples of all three.

Meet Millie June...
Can you make up a Millie for display?

Our Linen Millie tea towel tribute to the working women of the linen industry includes a cut-out pattern and instructions to assemble a Linen Millie doll, a focus for crafting skill and memories old and new.

From a first set of 18 Millies (9 from Scotland and 9 from N.Ireland), created for display at Dovecot Studios Edinburgh in September 2019, the collection now exceeds 160 dolls.

Making Millie 2024 displays a selection of Linen Millies by group including:
* Millie fae Fife, from around the Kingdom

This year, with the support of local enterprise, Sew Yarn Crafty on the High St in Dunfermline, we are calling out again, to display in tribute to Dunfermline’s own Linen Millies at FlaxFest24.

Can you tell the story of a Millie in tour family, for exhibition?

Meet Millie Fatima and Millie Robina...

Making Millie 2024 displays a selection of Linen Millies by group including
* A Dive into Archives, Flax Mill & Maltings, Shrewsbury
* One Millie, All Nations, Sewing2gether All Nations, Paisley

In 2021, the sewing group at The Flax Mill and Maltings in Shrewsbury reserached local archives and crafted Millies from the 1820s.

In 2022, the wonderful team at Sewing2gether All Nations in Paisley, worked with refugee women in Renfrewshire to craft their migration stories.

Linen mill workers, sometimes called ‘Millies’, formed the backbone of the first industry to emerge in Scotland and much of Europe. Journeys in Design commissioned a tea towel tribute to these working women.

Can you tell the story of a Millie in tour family, for exhibition?
