The question behind the question.

"We fancy the Caribbean this winter." It's a lovely message to get, and it's only the start. The Caribbean is lots of islands, each with its own pace, so the real work is in what comes next: what does a perfect day look like, beach or exploring, lively evenings or quiet ones, a direct flight or happy to connect?

That's the part of being a travel agent I enjoy most, and it's a skill you build with the right support around you.

Wi-Fi on easyJet flights, Birmingham to Canada direct, and summer 2028 holidays already on sale. Here's what caught my eye in travel this week.

Summer 2028 is on sale with easyJet holidays
easyJet holidays has opened its summer 2028 programme, joining Jet2holidays and TUI. There are more than 2,000 hotels across 67 destinations in Europe and North Africa, for travel from 1 April to 31 October 2028, with free child places at over 400 hotels and prices from £589 for seven nights in Turkey. If you've got a special trip in mind, booking early can mean first pick of rooms and dates.

Birmingham to Toronto, direct
Good news for the Midlands. Air Transat will fly from Birmingham to Toronto twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 23 June to 23 October 2027. It's Birmingham's first direct route to Canada, with onward connections to places like Vancouver, Montréal and Calgary. Toronto city break, Niagara Falls, the Rockies: it opens up a lot.

Wi-Fi is coming to easyJet
easyJet will offer Wi-Fi on board for the first time, rolling out across its A320 and A321 fleet from the first half of 2027, with the work expected to finish by early 2028. It hasn't said yet whether there'll be a charge.

Worth knowing: Ryanair bag drop times
From Tuesday 10 November, Ryanair's airport bag drop will close 60 minutes before departure, rather than 40. If you're checking a bag, just give yourself a little extra time. If you're travelling with hand luggage only and have checked in online, nothing changes.

Changes like these come up every week, and keeping across them is part of what I do, so you don't have to. If 2027 or 2028 is on your mind, I'd love to help you plan it.

A quick one for your lunch break, because it catches people out after a grey UK autumn: respect the tropical sun. Pack a sun cream with SPF 30 or higher and at least 4-star UVA protection, bring a hat, reapply after swimming, and plan some shade for the middle of the day. Your first afternoon shouldn't set the tone for the rest of the week.

When the evenings draw in, the Caribbean starts appearing in a lot of my conversations. It's one of those trips that feels simple ("somewhere hot, please") but the planning makes a real difference.

Here's what I'd sort before you book:
1. Pick the island, not just "the Caribbean". Every island has its own pace. Some are lively, some laid-back, some are about food, others about walking and views. Match the island to the holiday you actually want.
2. Know the seasons. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, so it's worth talking through how your dates fit.
3. Check every island's rules. Entry requirements differ from island to island, so check the FCDO travel advice for every stop, including cruise ports or a second island.
4. Plan your arrival day. It's a long-haul flight, so flight times, seats and transfers shape how your first evening feels.

Nobody knows it all on day one.

A Northern Lights enquiry is a good example. The questions get specific quickly: how many nights, where the skies are darkest, what the tour includes, what to do in the daytime.

A small Northern Lights tip that makes a real difference: let your eyes adjust. Switch off torches and phone screens and give your eyes time in the dark. Fainter displays can look pale or grey to the naked eye, and your phone camera will often pick up more colour than you can see, so take a photo too.

The Northern Lights are on so many bucket lists, and they're one trip where the planning really does shape what you see.

Here's what I'd plan before you go:
1. Think in nights, not a night. Clear skies and aurora activity both vary, so giving yourself several evenings gives you more chances.
2. Get away from the lights. Town and street lighting washes out a faint display, which is why so many tours head out to darker skies.
3. Dress for standing still. Aurora watching is mostly waiting outside in the cold. Layers, a warm hat, gloves and good boots, and ask whether thermal suits are included on your tour.
4. Plan days you'll love anyway. Husky rides, snowshoeing or a reindeer visit mean the trip is special even if the clouds roll in.
