Schengen Countries, Passport Validity Rules, EES & ETIAS Q&A
WHAT DOES VISITING THE SCHENGEN AREA CURRENTLY MEAN FOR A BRITISH PASSPORT HOLDER?
Currently you only need to present a valid passport to visit a Schengen country – this will be stamped on arrival.
*From 10th November EES will come into effect – see below for further information.
ALL ABOUT EES
The Entry Exit System (EES) is a new electronic system that replaces passport stamping when you enter an EU or Schengen Zone country. From 10th November 2024 all entry and exit movements will be registered electronically onto a database.
Before you travel, there’s nothing different you need to do—the Advanced Passenger Information (API) form you already complete will be used by the airline to send your details.
Upon arrival at your destination, the first time you use it might mean it takes a bit longer to pass through border control as your biometric data (face image and four fingerprints) will be added. Currently, the fingerprints of children below 12 years old are not scanned.
In case there are any delays, you may wish to take along extra water.
You can find out more by visiting EU EES website
WILL I HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME I TRAVEL?
After the launch, EES checks will be required every time you travel into and exit the Schengen area.
You’ll have to re-register if three years or more have passed since your last exit from a country in the Schengen area.
If British, or non-Schengen passport holders, decide to visit a country in the Schengen area within a three-year period, the process will be streamlined with only one biometric check.
WILL I BE DELAYED AT PASSPORT CONTROL?
While the checks will only take a few minutes for each person to do, they may lead to longer queue times at the border upon arrival for people travelling to countries in the Schengen area. These are likely to vary from location to location and will depend on passenger volumes and processing capacity at the point of which EES processing is carried out. In case there are any delays, you may wish to take along extra water.
WHAT ABOUT BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN, WILL THEY ALSO BE REGISTERED?
Currently, the fingerprints of children below 12 years old are not scanned.
ALL ABOUT ETIAS
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System or ETIAS is planned to be introduced from April 2025 at the earliest. This will be a bit like an ESTA that you’d apply for when travelling to the USA. It’s not a visa, but if you’re visiting an EU or Schengen zone country for a short stay*, you’ll need to register your details before you travel via a quick and easy online form – it’ll cost just €7 and will be valid for three years.
The form isn’t yet available, so if you’re travelling after April 2025, check the EU ETIAS website closer to your departure date.
*A short stay is classed as no more than 90 days in a 180-day period.
You can find out more by visiting EU ETIAS website
WHEN WILL I NEED TO APPLY FOR ETIAS?
The actual implementation date is not yet confirmed but is expected to be from April 25 at the earliest- but don’t worry, if you have a holiday booked with us, we’ll let you know all the details as soon as they are confirmed.
