Really enjoyed giving this talk on Medieval Edinburgh and great to have both familiar and new faces in the audience.

The talk was one of the events that ran alongside the Reviving the Trinity Stones Exhibition, which is also free and on the ground floor of the Museum of Edinburgh until the end of June.

If you're interested in the future of the Trinity Apse (which some locals might remember as the Brass Rubbing Centre) there's still a few spaces at the next talk on Saturday 27th June. Booking is via the council's Culture Edinburgh website or you can find links in my bio.

Did you know that the Museum of Edinburgh has a peaceful hidden courtyard? It can only be accessed by going through the Museum and its a treasure trove of architectural fragments from the city's past. From 15th century stone bosses to 19th century plaques via trade stones, quern stones, marriage lintels, statues, gargoyles, sundials and more. Together with some pretty planting to enjoy, not to mention the wonderful Museum itself, its a lovely way to spend a quiet half an hour πŸ™‚

No wonder I love my job when this is my walk to work πŸ’š 😎

Today, I was out and about seeing the sights and chatting Edinburgh history with four lovely Canadians. One of who had an aunt from Kirkwall, in Orkney, which is where I went to school - it really is a small world πŸ™‚

A picture of one of my favourite rocks (yes I have more than one πŸ˜…) to say Happy Birthday to Edinburgh man James Hutton, born on this day 300 years ago πŸ₯³

Often referred to as 'the Father of Modern Geology', Hutton completely transformed the way people thought about the earth, how it had formed, how old it was, and how it continues to change.

I went to a talk about Hutton by Ray Perman, at the Old Edinburgh Club earlier this year, and he sounded like a fascinating man. Not only were his interests were wide ranging, Perman also described him as a one-man party, who could light up a room with his presence, with a love for gaity and good fun. These traits don't really come across in his rather sombre portraits but make him one of my top choices for that question of who would you invite to a dinner party of the dead (obviously only if we could restore them to life for the night!).

πŸ₯ƒ Three (hundred) cheers to James Hutton πŸ₯ƒ

A nice bit of industrial heritage spotted up on Carlton Terrace. A manhole cover by Primrose & Co, Albert Foundry, Leith.

The company was owned by iron founder and engineer, James Primrose, until his death in 1922. The Albert Foundry was located, not as you might imagine in Albert Street but, in James Street which (I think) was in the area now known as Jane Street industrial estate.

There's an interior photo of the Foundry in 1947 on Capital Collections, just search for Primrose & Co.

Did you know that this building has probably been around since at least the end of the 17th century. It's believed to be an old coaching inn and it sits on Calton Road/White Horse Close in the Canongate - at one point this was the main route into Edinburgh (then just the Old Town) from the East.

The building (or one very similar) can be seen in John Slezer's Queen Anne view, drafted around 1690, and there are also indications in it's construction that it is an old building.

Two common 'tells' are the fact that it has wall-head dormers (that is windows that break through the top of exterior wall rather than sitting further back and breaking through the roof (like the larger white framed windows)) and also the very steep pitch of the roof.

Both wall-head dormers and steep roof pitches were common features in Scottish vernacular architecture of the 17th century.

With all the comings-and-goings this building has seen as a coachhouse over the centuries just imagine if walls could talk!!

Planting out for this years Edinburgh's Floral Clock is underway. This year it is celebrating 20 years of Trellis, the national charity for therapeutic gardening. In just 20 years the charity has grown from 83 gardening projects across Scotland to over 530, providing help and support to over 15,000 disabled and vulnerable people 🫢🌻

Visit www.trellisscotland.org.uk if you want to find out more.

Edinburgh's Floral Clock was first created in 1903, making it the oldest Floral Clock in the world. With 10s of 1000s of sedums needing to being planted out to complete the design, it is due to be completed by the end of June.
