TRAVELLING SOLO 🙋🏼♀️
I have travelled multiple times in my own, for weekends away as well as longer trips (4-6 months) and I STILL get butterflies 🦋 before I set off.
But that is part of the beauty of it. Feeling alive, excited, anxious, nervous and feeling like you can take on the world (especially after navigating your way through a foreign country where you don’t speak the language.)
But if you are struggling with fighting the fear and kickstarting your solo adventure, here are my top tips:
✅ Feel the fear and do it anyway. And when I say feel it, I mean really FEEL IT. Confront it, question it and reason with it. Logicalise the s**t out of it.
✅ Plan but not too much. Do enough planning to make yourself feel comfortable in where you are going for a few days. You are sure to meet people if you stay in hostels or at a homestay, so leave the rest of your itinerary open after that. You’ll quickly get into the flow, trust me.
✅ Research! Know where you are going - their traditions, customs, likes / dislikes, what is rude and what isn’t and learn a few phrases in their language - it goes along way in the form of respect.
✅ Download maps.me and download the map for the first place you are going. It has live tracking on it so you can check where you are going at all times. I do this to help me navigate transport, especially when I don’t know the language of the country I am going to.
✅ DO NOT LISTEN TO NAYSAYERS. I’ve had family, friends and strangers tell me I’m crazy when I say I’m off travelling alone. If you have done your research, planned as much as you need to and you are sensible / safe, you will be fine. Don’t let them stop you from going in the first place.
