Edinburgh’s history is full of women who built businesses, commissioned buildings, and shaped this city’s social, economic and cultural life. And yet most of their names have been forgotten.

That’s what Unearthed: The Women of Edinburgh is about.

A two-part experience that begins underground with and continues above ground through the streets of the Old Town, where I’ll introduce you to some of the women who have been hiding in plain sight all along.

Swipe through to meet just a few of them. Then head to the link in bio to book.

They were always here. Now it’s time to find them. 🔍

Weekends throughout May. Limited availability.

History is full of stories… but not all of them were told.

This May, we’re proud to introduce Unearthed: The Women of Edinburgh Tour, led by our own storyteller Anna Dowling-Clarke, founder of Women Hidden in Plain Sight (WHIPS).

This unique two-part experience begins underground at The Real Mary King’s Close, before continuing above ground on a guided walking tour through Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Together, you’ll uncover the lives of the women who owned, built, resisted, created and shaped this city, yet were so often overlooked.

📅 Running weekends throughout May
⏳ Approx. 2.5–3 hours
🎟️ Spaces are limited, advance booking recommended

Instagram rather rudely deleted this reel a few months ago, so I’m reposting it in celebration of a recent announcement!

These two women will soon be joined by a statue of Dr Elsie Inglis — the first statue of a woman on the Royal Mile. Despite some controversy around its design, the choice of sculptor and history regarding the Inglis family, the fact that another woman is being recognised in a city where there are more statues of dogs than women seems something to celebrate.

Apologies for the ugly TikTok watermark on the video but downloading from my TikTok was the only way to salvage the video.

Furthermore, although there are other sculptural renderings depicting other women in Edinburgh, there are only two standalone statues depicting recognised historical women.

Welcome to WHIPS: Women Hidden in Plain Sight, a platform dedicated to uncovering and celebrating the incredible achievements of women whose legacies have been forgotten—or deliberately erased—from history. Last year, we partnered with VoiceMap, a self-guided tour company, to create a walking tour through Edinburgh's Old Town, highlighting the remarkable women who helped shape the city. We’re currently working on a similar tour for Stirling!
