Solo Female Destinations Worth Your time:

Nine years of people asking me the same question, and my answer has barely moved: if it's your first time going solo, go to Portugal or Japan. 🌍

Not because they're the most exciting places on the list. Because they get out of your way. Good trains, easy walking, and nobody so much as glancing at a woman eating dinner on her own.

Here's the short version of what I'd tell a friend:

🔹 Easiest first pick: Portugal or Japan
🔹 Safest on paper: Iceland and New Zealand, with Slovenia and Austria right behind
🔹 Cheapest by a mile: Vietnam, at roughly £32 a day (about €37 or $40)
🔹 Best for meeting people: Croatia, Vietnam and Thailand
🔹 Save Morocco for trip two or three, once you've got a bit of solo muscle

💷 I've put a full cost table in the guide too, in pounds, euros and dollars, because "budget-friendly" means nothing until you see the numbers.

The bit nobody tells you: the women who have the best solo trips aren't the fearless ones. They're the prepared ones. Sort the boring stuff and you actually get to enjoy the place. ✅

Solo Travel Safety!

Nobody tells you this, but the riskiest part of a solo trip is usually the first two hours. 😅

You're knackered, you're carrying everything you own, you don't know the money yet, and every tout at arrivals can spot you from thirty metres away.

I've just put together the guide I wish I'd had before my first proper solo trip. Not fear-mongering, just what actually works:

✅ Why your accommodation choice quietly removes half your problems
✅ The scams aimed specifically at people travelling alone (and the one word that ends them)
✅ How to tell "uncomfortable" apart from "wrong" and what to do about each
✅ Night transport compared honestly, including the option that isn't worth the saving
✅ The safety kit worth buying, and the gadgets that are pure marketing
✅ What solo female travellers say actually helps, rather than what listicles claim

Travel Anxiety: What it is and how to deal with it!

Nobody at the departure gate ever admits they're quietly panicking. Everyone's just scrolling, looking unbothered. Meanwhile at least a few of them have a heart going like a washing machine on spin cycle. 😅

Here's what actually helps, learned the hard way over a lot of flights:

🔹 Most travel anxiety isn't about the plane. It's about not knowing what happens next
🔹 Book your airport transfer AND first night before anything else. Two decisions removed from the hardest part of the trip
✅ The Sunflower lanyard is free, needs no proof of diagnosis, and quietly tells staff you might need a bit more time
💡 Learn what the plane noises mean and half the fear just evaporates
⏰ First flight of the day = fewer delays, calmer terminal

The bit that surprised me most? Loads of people terrified of flying have never actually had a bad flight. The fear is built entirely from imagination. Which is oddly reassuring.

Cabin Luggage vs Checked Luggage 🧳

There are two types of person at every airport.

The one strolling past the baggage belt with a small wheelie bag, already halfway to the taxi rank. And the one at carousel four, watching the same three sad suitcases go round while the screen changes to "last bag delivered."

I've been both. More times than I'd like to admit.

The truth is neither wins every time. Cabin-only is brilliant until you're washing pants in a hotel sink. Checked luggage is glorious until it's on a different continent to you.

So I did the honest version. What each one actually costs, what it costs you in time and hassle, and how to pick without overthinking it.

A few things worth knowing before you book:

✅ On most budget airlines the "free" bag is the tiny underseat one, not the wheelie case
✅ Turning up at the gate with the wrong size bag can cost around £70 / €70 / $95 on the spot
✅ Roughly 5 bags per 1,000 passengers go astray, and most turn up within a day or two
✅ Power banks and spare batteries? Cabin only. Never the hold. That one's not up for debate
✅ There's a middle-ground setup most people miss (outbound cabin, return checked)

Bath Self-guided Walking Tour + Map 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Bath is one of those places that looks like someone built an entire city just to show off. And honestly? They did.

I put together a self-guided walking route that links up all the Georgian stuff properly, so you're not zigzagging back and forth across town. Starts at the Abbey, down to Pulteney Bridge, along Great Pulteney Street (which is 300 metres of near-identical townhouses and genuinely stopped me in my tracks), then up the hill to Queen Square, the Circus, and finishes at the Royal Crescent with the park below it.

About 3.5km. Sounds like nothing. Give it a full day anyway, because Bath punishes anyone in a rush.

Ghent Medieval Walking Tour 🇧🇪

Everyone tells you to go to Bruges. And you should. But nobody warns you that Ghent might be the one that actually gets under your skin.

I went in expecting a quieter, smaller cousin. It's not. There's a proper moated medieval castle sitting right in the middle of the old town (Gravensteen, and yes you can walk the battlements), a student crowd that keeps the whole place feeling alive instead of preserved behind glass, and that famous row of guild houses along the Graslei that genuinely looks like someone painted it.

I've mapped the whole thing as one continuous loop, no backtracking, no jumping between random neighbourhoods. St Bavo's Cathedral and the Van Eyck altarpiece, up the belfry, along the water, into the castle, a wander through the Patershol lanes, a beer on Vrijdagmarkt next to a giant medieval cannon, and a skyline finish out at Citadelpark. About 4km, easily a full day if you let it breathe.

London Hidden Lanes Walking Tour 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Everyone does the same London day. Big Ben, a photo, the palace, another photo, done.

But the bits I keep sending people back to aren't on the postcard route at all. They're down alleys with no signage, behind unmarked doors, in courtyards you'd walk straight past if you didn't know to look.

So I pulled my favourites into one walk that actually links up, no random tube-hopping between them. You start at a pub hidden down an alley so narrow you'll miss it twice (Ye Olde Mitre), wander the old legal quarter, hit the candy-coloured courtyard everyone's seen but nobody can name (Neal's Yard), duck through Seven Dials and a couple of Victorian passages that look straight out of Dickens, cut through Chinatown into a Soho food courtyard tucked behind Carnaby Street, then finish in a tiny Mayfair square that feels more like a village.

About 4.5km, flat and easy, and there's a free Google map in the article so you can just follow along.

Dubrovnik Self-Guided Walking Tour 🇭🇷🚶

Dubrovnik does this thing where you walk through Pile Gate for the first time and just... stop. Everyone does it. The light on the limestone, the sea right there past the walls, the whole Old Town built at exactly the right scale for wandering.

I've put together a full self-guided walking tour that links up the best of it without turning into a death march. You start at Pile Gate, do the city walls loop first thing while your legs are fresh, drop down into Stradun and the old core, work past the harbour to Ploče Gate, catch the cable car up Mount Srđ for the view that ties everything together, and finish with a drink at a cliffside bar wedged into the rock outside the walls.

Around 5km, a full day, and a free Google Map to follow along.

A few things I learned the hard way in there too: get to the walls before 8am, book your tickets ahead so you're not stuck in the cruise-ship queue, and wear proper grip because that stone is polished smooth and gets lethal in the wet.

Munich Self-Guided Walking Tour 🇩🇪🚶

Munich might be the easiest city in Europe to have a brilliant day in. You can do medieval squares, a beer hall that's been pouring since the 1500s, and one of the biggest urban parks in the world, all in a single walk. And yes, that park has surfers. Actual surfers, riding a standing wave in the middle of the city like it's the most normal thing going.

I've put together a full self-guided route that links it all up properly, from Marienplatz through Viktualienmarkt and the Hofbräuhaus, past the old squares, and finishing with a litre stein under the chestnut trees at the Chinese Tower beer garden. About 4.5km, no rushing, a full afternoon well spent.

Ever stood at King's Cross staring at the board, wondering why the same LNER train to Edinburgh is £41 one minute and £200 the next? 😅

You're not going mad. LNER prices everything as single legs now, and once you get how it works, the fast trains up the East Coast get a lot cheaper and a lot less stressful.
