My name is Mitaire Okumagba, I am the founder of AKUAPEM Nature Retreat. As I sit down to share this story with you, I find myself reflecting deeply on the journey that has led us here— a journey of the soul
. In the aftermath of the covid lockdown, in the whirlwind of global changes and personal resistance to the pressures of the times, I found myself yearning for a connection deeper than anything the modern world could offer. It was a calling back to nature, to the roots of spiritual awakening, that guided my footsteps to the mountainous regions of Ghana. This land, rich in history and spirit, promised a safe haven for rediscovery and healing. It felt immediately like a pilgrimage; a journey to a place deep within myself that I had longed to be. The most transformative moment came when I met with Priest Dunsini Nana Osei at an African shrine. All misconceptions I had been fed about such places were immediately dispelled. In that moment, surrounded by the sacredness of nature and the authentic practices of healing, I came to realise —I was experiencing a spiritual healing. Listening to Dunsini as he introduced me to medicinal plants, performing cleansing rituals, prayers, and libations, it became clear that what I previously knew to be ‘healing’ was perversed. There I discovered true healing and embraced the peace within the natural world. This experience told a powerful truth: healing begins with oneself. It is a journey back to ourselves, to the harmony that exists when we align with mother nature’s wisdom. Inspired by my own path of rediscovery in Ghana, AKUAPEM Nature Retreat was conceived as a sanctuary for those seeking their own awakening. It is a place where the weary can find rest, the seeker can find answers, and every soul can embark on their own pilgrimage.
