The definition of wilderness medicine, and wilderness EMS, has surprisingly not been well-established in our field. In the twentieth century, definitions largely utilized time characteristics, and these definitions persist in some publications, organizations, and protocols to the current day. These....

Had a great two weeks running sea kayak safety and rescue programs in Northern Ireland. Following the ISKGA modular system we have looked at the various roles within the group. The leader, his/her assistant (No2), the catch man and the remainder of the group, who will in turn have active roles and responsibilities on any venture. We have also looked at the various environmental aspects to the leadership process, developing group management and reactive drills for the surf zone, rock gardens, open water crossings and tide races. The course participants have worked super hard throughout the program and despite having various levels of technical ability and experience, have bonded into some very strong teams.

Hello to all the new followers. Check out this great vid featuring Tom Thorpe. Tom is a trainee ISKGA advanced guide and spends a lot of time in open water but he seems he is returning to the transition zone 🤘🏼

Surfing though rock gaps and playing in a beach break. Check out the high brake/stall to avoid being smashed on a rock! Great waves and amazing fun.

Hello to all the new followers, thank you for liking the page🙂
One of the biggest things we can all do to increase our safety- is to maintain our skills and fitness.
If you are a keen paddler, guide or a coach- the day when you got your skills/guide badge or certificate was just the start of your journey. That shouldn't be the day when you were at your best. Be the best now, set goals and make a plan. Expand your comfort zones and be familiar with those exciting locations.
Dust off the bike, the bikini and those running shoes!
If that squall hits you, make a plan, paddle harder, hold ground or ride the storm 💙
