🌊 We came for Gavin and Stacey… but stayed for the coastline that completely stole our hearts 🇬🇧⛺

So we headed to Barry for our May half-term camping trip. To commence, it was slightly tongue-in-cheek, stimulated by an adoration of the UK sitcom Gavin and Stacey, but also fitting the bill of missing our trips to South Wales, where there had been many a happy time spent on the Gower and the surroundings of Swansea and the Mumbles.

And Barry just seemed a little less of an epic drive from Nottingham, whilst also being there with a coastal temporary Caravan and Camping Club site just outside Barry, in Fontygary.

I guess my expectations were shaped from what I’d been seeing on the TV, and I wasn’t necessarily expecting the same rugged beauty as further along the coastline, but in fairness, it captured my heart, and we will definitely return, not just for the charm of Barry and the island, but the beauty and accessibility of the surrounding area.

The location comes highly recommended for a family-friendly camping holiday and a reminder that sometimes the places we least expect can pleasantly surprise us the most.

Sometimes I wonder whether the “cheap” UK seaside staycation is actually a bit of a false economy… 🌊💸

My travel practice has always been about seeking out the best value travel experiences possible. Stretching a relatively small budget as far as I can, whilst exposing my young son to as much diversity in destinations, cultures, and travel experiences as possible… and truthfully, because I personally love the variety too.

But even with the tightest reins on escalating arcade expenditure, seaside snacks, ice creams, and fairground rides… UK seaside days out can add up alarmingly quickly. Add in accommodation costs, especially during school holidays, and sometimes I come home having spent eyewateringly more than I would on some of my overseas trips.

Now don’t get me wrong… I absolutely LOVE the UK staycation. When the weather behaves itself, there is genuinely nowhere quite like it. Long beach days, fish and chips, camping, coastal walks, and simple family time are incredibly special. ☀️🏖️

But I do question whether it is always the cheaper alternative people assume it to be.
