For our last night in Spain on the Go West tour, we have come to Santillana del Mar, which is close to Santander but surprisingly not on the sea.
It is a lovely preserved Cantabrian village with two paradors one, Gil Blas has rooms and does the catering and bar. The other used to be just an accommodation block but now has been refurbished to a very high standard and opened in June. It still smells of fresh paint!

Today’s stop is Leon. After a great sunrise in Belmonte we are at another administrative capital just like Merida, but here capital of Castille and Leon.
Our hotel is the extensively remodelled 5* Parador which, amongst other things, has an excellent art collection

We’ve gone far West out of Spain and into Portugal to beautiful Belmonte. All is peace and tranquility with the best views. The food here is pretty good too and the black swimming pool is self heating!

We’ve been at Merida since the weekend. A great drive to Caceres and then on and into town. Merida  has been important for many a long year. It seems there are Roman ruins just about everywhere but now it is the administrative centre of the Extramadura region
