Day 7 of Beala’s Brunei & Borneo adventure. After breakfast we had the privilege to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, one of only four in the world. Founded in 1964 this foundation helps once captivated Orangutans learn to climb and fend for themselves in the wild so that they can be released back into the jungle. Next to this is the Sun Bear Conservation Centre which has approx 26 Sun Bears, which are the smallest of the Bear Species and unfortunately they are rapidly diminishing in Southeast Asia due to exploitation and lack of education. After these visits we were transferred by boat from Sandakan to Abai. We passed through pristine mangrove forests along the Kinabatangan River delta. Upon checking in at our beautiful lodge, Abai Jungle Lodge we were treated to a lovely lunch and after a torrential downpour had passed we headed out on an open top boat to sail down the river and had the absolute pleasure of seeing various species of monkeys, birds and other amazing wildlife. Then as night fell we witnessed the sun set on the river before the icing on the cake.
The glittering fireflies on the mangrove trees. This was a spectacular experience/day. 😊
