Following on from yesterday’s post about what to do in Chester, on a budget, I thought that I’d share some ideas for pit stops along your walking route from the Moxy Hotel in Chester—each offering comfort, cafés, and clean loos, perfect for refreshing breaks mid-stroll 📍

☕ 1. Café 1092 (Chester Cathedral)
• Set within the stunning 13th‑century monks’ refectory, it offers great coffee, light meals, and a beautiful historic ambiance .
• Facilities: fully accessible, including disabled toilets .
• Where it fits: ideal after exploring the Rows and City Walls near the cathedral.

🌳 2. The Lodge Café (Grosvenor Park)
• Housed in the Grade II Gate Lodge at the main entrance of Grosvenor Park .
• Food & drink: all‑day brunch, sandwiches, hot drinks, homemade cakes—and takeaway picnic options if you’d rather enjoy them in the park .
• Facilities: accessible ground‑floor toilets.
• Where it fits: perfect after wandering the Roman Gardens and before the riverside leg of your walk.

☕ 3. Little Roodee Cafe (near River Dee)
• Charming local café right off the city walls by the River Dee .
• Food & drink: simple, tasty meals and snacks at great value.
• Facilities: known for its clean toilets—a rarity for cafés by the riverside .
• Where it fits: ideal to pause and recharge during your riverbank stroll back toward the city centre.

✅ Suggested Route Including Pit‑Stops
1. Moxy Hotel → City Walls & Rows →
2. Stop 1: Café 1092 at Chester Cathedral — mid‑morning coffee and loo break
3. Continue Rows → Cathedral → Roman Gardens & Grosvenor Park →
4. Stop 2: Lodge Café in Grosvenor Park — brunch, cakes, takeaway picnic
5. Walk the Park & River Dee →
6. Stop 3: Little Roodee Café — riverside refreshment before heading back
7. Finish the loop: return via Walls or city centre to Moxy Hotel

📝 Quick Tips
• Opening hours: Café 1092 is open daily from ~9:30 am to 4 pm . The Lodge and Little Roodee are café‑normal hours.
• Accessibility: All three have toilets; Café 1092 also has a disabled restroom.
• Vibe: A mix of historic (Café 1092), scenic parkland (Lodge), and relaxed riverside (Little Roodee).

Edinburgh is packed with charm, history, and stunning views—and you can experience a lot of it without spending a penny. Here’s a solid list of free things you can do on a day trip to Edinburgh:

🌿 Outdoor Sights & Walks
• Arthur’s Seat – Hike up this extinct volcano for breathtaking panoramic views over the city. It’s not too tough and feels a bit like the Highlands-in-a-city.
• Calton Hill – An easier climb than Arthur’s Seat with iconic views (great for photos) and a few monuments to explore.
• Royal Mile – Walk the full stretch from Edinburgh Castle down to Holyrood Palace. Great atmosphere, street performers, closes (alleyways), and quirky shops to browse.
• Dean Village – A hidden gem just a short walk from the city centre. It’s like stepping into a quiet storybook village along the Water of Leith.
• Princes Street Gardens – Relax with a view of the Castle and admire the floral clock and monuments dotted around.

🏛️ Free Museums & Galleries
• National Museum of Scotland – A brilliant mix of Scottish history, science, technology, and natural history. The rooftop terrace also offers another free viewpoint.
• Scottish National Gallery – Right off Princes Street with works by Botticelli, Turner, Monet, and more. It’s peaceful and beautifully presented.
• Museum of Edinburgh – Free and located on the Royal Mile, this gives you a closer look at the city’s past, including Greyfriars Bobby’s collar.
• The People’s Story Museum – Right next to the Museum of Edinburgh, it’s all about Edinburgh’s working-class history.

🎨 Unique & Offbeat
• St Giles’ Cathedral – Beautiful architecture and stained glass. Entry is free (donation suggested). Don’t miss the Thistle Chapel inside.
• Writers’ Museum – Dedicated to literary legends like Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. It’s tucked away in Lady Stair’s Close off the Royal Mile.
• Greyfriars Kirkyard – Wander among old gravestones and meet the statue of Greyfriars Bobby. Great for Harry Potter fans, as some character names were inspired by headstones here.

🧭 Bonus Tips
• Pop into The Scottish Parliament Building (free tours when available).
• Visit the Museum on the Mound to learn about money, including seeing a million pounds in cash.
• Catch free walking tours (technically free, but tipping the guide is standard). Companies like City Explorers or Free Tour Edinburgh operate daily.

Please look out for tomorrow’s post, as I map out a walking route, with times, to show just how many places can be accessed in a day.
