On Wednesday we were walking across Porthcressa beach and our dog ran ahead and was sniffing something and I realised it was some washed up goose barnacles.

So the kids and I of course ran over to them to have a look. It was a big wooden beam with a few hundred goosies attached but I noticed that some of them were a lot more orange.

It turns out the orange ones are a species we haven’t seen before- Lepas hillii. The common ones we normally see are Lepas anatifera.

Lepas hillii is identified by a bright orange collar at the base of the capitulum and deeper orange colour to the plate edges.

Amongst the L. anatifera I counted 60+ L. hillii (approximately 1:5 hillii to anatifera).

L. hillii is a tropical / sub-tropical species which is very rarely found in Britain but when they do occur it’s usually only odd ones amongst L. anatifera colonies.

Discussing with Martin Gray on the Orkney Isles, it is thought that this colony in Porthcressa could be one of the largest aggregations of L. hillii ever washed ashore in Europe which is pretty epic stuff!

Keep an eye out for any washed up and please let me know if you spot any 🧡

Goose barnacles!

A friend messaged me yesterday to tell me that a huge log had washed up on Shark’s pit absolutely covered in goose barnacles. So, this morning that’s where we headed.

The log was absolutely enormous, around 10 metres in length and was so tightly compacted with goose barnacles, there must be hundreds of thousands on there.

Lots of people came throughout the morning to come and admire them and take photos. So beautiful, yet so sad that this has ended up being their fate. They will all slowly die as even if they were put back in the ocean, they wouldn’t survive as the water temperature is too cold.

At least they are being appreciated and admired - I wish I could know where the log has travelled from and all the things it has seen 🌊
