Well worth a visit…

Fascinating Petra is an ancient Nabataean city in southern Jordan, renowned for its stunning rock-cut architecture, particularly the Treasury (Al-Khazneh).

Hidden for centuries, it was only rediscovered in August, 1812 by Swiss explorer and geographer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. He was the first European to lay eyes on the city for around 1000 years.

Burckhardt is also credited with the discovery of the temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt.

Disguised as an Arab scholar named Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah, he tricked local Bedouin guides into taking him to the site by claiming he wanted to sacrifice a goat at the tomb of Aaron.

Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’. It was carved into red sandstone cliffs around 4th Century BC.

This Rose City features intricate tombs, temples, and advanced water systems. Situated in a desert wadi, it is accessed through the Siq, a narrow, dramatic gorge.

The capital of the wealthy Nabataean Kingdom, Petra was later annexed by the Romans but was abandoned after earthquakes and shifting trade routes.

When in Hanoi, don’t miss the truly unique experience of Hanoi Train Street. It is located in the Old Quarter between Phùng Hưng and Trần Phú streets (notably near 5 Trần Phú).

This famous, narrow residential street, where trains pass inches from cafes, is such fun. Visitors are generally escorted by cafe owners who run their businesses out of their modest homes.

It is a high-risk but popular spot where locals and tourists watch the train pass along the narrow tracks at various times of the day and night.

I have visited on a few occasions and each experience was vibey yet different.

Don’t forget to put a beer bottle cap on the tracks….it will be flattened into a disc by the train and provide you with a tiny, unique keepsake!

One of my favourite places to visit is vibrant Hoi An. This city, on Vietnam’s central coast, is known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, cut through with canals. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.

It is close to the city of Da Nang which can be reached by air, rail or road.

A former port city from the 15th to 19th, Hoi An is a melting-pot of history which is reflected in its architecture.

Hoi An is relaxed and offers an eclectic mix of eras and styles, from wooden Chinese shophouses and temples to colourful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge with its pagoda.

Hoi An is famous for its colourful lanterns. The Thu Bon river turns into a rainbow at night as the lantern boats whizz up and down the river.

The Hoi An Lantern Festival occurs monthly on the 14th day of the lunar month, when the Old Town dims its electric lights for traditional lantern-lit, candlelight ambiance, boat rides, and local games.
