Ten days in the life of a blackbird family... 😍
I recently added a trail camera to my equipment, primarily to support some survey work that I have begun with the purpose of answering some questions about our otter population on Arran. I'm not licenced, so any camera trapping needs to be done with great sensitivity so as not to disturb otters in their resting places esp holts.
With the land managers permission, I put the camera in a small burn where I often find otter spraint πŸ’© and left it there over ten days and nights, hoping to gain some insight into otter movements.
Spoiler alert- I did, but thats in a later post... 🦦
The biggest surprise was that when I picked the camera up I discovered that I had nearly 5000 images of the trials and tribulations of a male blackbird aka SuperDad. This little guy was definitely working overtime to get his family fed. πŸ’ͺπŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ It's a fascinating insight into a common garden bird which has delighted me 🀩.
Blackbirds like to nest in dense bushes and thickets and once the young leave the nest, they skulk around under cover for many days (at least 10 in this case) while the parents feed them. It is often only the male blackbird who does this, especially if the female is preparing for, or incubating the next brood.
Initially I only spotted one chick, but was not surprised to see a second. Towards the end of the sequence I realised that there were at least three babies. The female made barely any appearances, and certainly never fed anyone, and I suspect he was bringing her food on a nest too. πŸͺ±πŸͺ±πŸͺ±πŸͺ±
It was gorgeous to see the chicks splashing in the small pool in the burn, and even start to forage for their own food. It looks like the male successfully raised all three despite the presence of a number of non native predators, including regular mink visits, and two different domestic cats. 😱

A super effort by a familiar bird that is often overlooked by birders. ❀️ πŸ†

1. Dad feeding a chick.
2. There are two!
3. Feeding two greedy mouths
4. Three!
5. Chick taking a bath.
6. Female blackbird- mum?
7. Chick starting to forage for itself.
8. American mink
9. Large well fed cat
10. Smaller tabby pattern cat

Happy World Oceans Day from Lamlash Bay! I hope you enjoy this wee timeline cleanser πŸ˜πŸ’™
However....

Our Oceans are the lifeblood of our planet and they are in deep trouble. Over-fished, polluted, and bearing the brunt of anthropogenic climate change, ocean systems are on the brink of collapse.....

And yet- there is a reason for optimism, as demonstrated by our very own Lamlash Bay No Take Zone, and the South Arran Marine Protected Area. If we properly protect our oceans, coasts and seabed, they are remarkably resilient, with dramatic recovery possible in just a few years.
BUT we need to stop tinkering and commit to real protection.

In Scotland, this means meaningful protection for our existing network of Marine Protected Areas- most of which are protected in name only, where the most harmful forms of fishing continue to rake and rip up the seabed.

Action:
Head over to Our Seas to sign the petition for proper protection for Scotland's seas. https://www.ourseas.scot/
Also- check out Arran Coast 's feed for some inspirational proof that protection can turn around devastation so very quickly- with biodiversity booming in protected areas.

I guess you could call this new wee job a side hustle- today I started working as guide/crew for Lamlash Cruises 🀩.

Dont worry, I'm still primarily land based, but its also very cool to be enjoying Arran's wildlife from the sea. This afternoon we saw porpoises 🐬🐬 just off Holy Isle πŸ’™ so its quite an auspicious start!

Get in touch with them for trips to Holy Isle, charters and even RIB adventures further afield to places like Ailsa Craig. Thanks Grant, Steve and John for a great first day in the job.

On my way home to Arran after a few days working in the Lake District- including a night out wild camping high in the Fells. I'm sharing this here because wild camping is an increasingly popular past time and there are some misconceptions about how to do it, where, and what is acceptable. Unfortunately even on Arran- our wild places are getting trashed by people camping and making a mess.

Wild camping is:
βœ…οΈ Remote, ideally out of view from main paths
βœ…οΈ Low impact
βœ…οΈ Leave no trace
βœ…οΈ Unobtrusive
βœ…οΈ Arrive late, leave early
βœ…οΈ Pick up your litter and any more you see
βœ…οΈ Check the weather forecast and make sure you are equipped.

Wild camping is not:
❌️ Car or roadside camping
❌️ Boozy parties
❌️ Lighting fires
❌️ Leaving your trash
❌️ Getting yourself into bother because your kit/experience levels aren't up to the conditions.

Wild camping IS an amazing way to experience the tranquility of the mountains after everyone else has gone home and I do recommend it. I go by the mantra . See second pic for how my campsite looked when I was packed up and ready to go. πŸ˜€

Just heavenly in Glen Rosa this morning!
Too many wonderful things to list but I'm going to try: whinchat, tiger beetles, male hen harrier, cuckoo, tree pipit, meadow pipit, golden eagle, butterwort (carnivorous plant), bluebells galore and Arran whitebeams, (lovingly planted by volunteers)- the rarest trees on earth.... WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?

The glen was busy with people enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Huge thanks to the NTS Arran Ranger Service for taking such good care of the place. Please please please if you visit the glen, take your litter home, beware of the dangers of discarded ci******es and don't light fires of any kind. So many wonderful things make the glen their home. It is a precious place. πŸ’š

Simply glorious afternoon on the shore. Lots of birds about including eiders and a female sparrowhawk being bothered by house martins. High point was probably watching a dog otter fishing for his supper. Later on I found these unmistakeable tracks on the beach (second pic). 🦦

Holy Isle, you are always a joy to visit. Today and I led a walk over Mullach Mor for the Arran Mountain Festival. As you can see from the pictures, the views from the top are sensational. Thanks indeed to the Samye Ling community for taking such great care of the place and also to Lamlash Cruises for safely delivering us to the island and bringing us home. πŸ™
