How To Protect Yourself From The Corona Virus

How To Protect Yourself From The Corona Virus
As of the 12th March, 2020, the Corona Virus (COVID-19) has been recognized as a worldwide pandemic. We have known about the virus ever since it hit China last month, but now that it is at your door you need to protect yourself. Identifying symptoms, too, is important so that you can get help and avoid infecting others.
Don’t Panic
It is important to stay calm and focused on reality. While this situation and the word pandemic are very scary, panic only minimizes our ability to think rationally. One of the greatest ways to curtail panic is with knowledge and awareness.
Prepare
First, let’s talk about what you need in order to prepare.
• The main thing you might face is prolonged periods of quarantine. This has happened in China and Italy both, so it may happen to you. In the case of quarantine, you will have to stay inside your home.

• There are some key things you can do to prepare (just in case):

o “Create an emergency contact list.” This should include emergency contacts for neighbors, friends, family, your health care team, employers, schools and your local health department.

o “Learn about your employer’s emergency operations plan.” Find out exactly what your plan covers as to sick leave, work from home possibilities and how your employer plans to deal with this outbreak.

o Most important, stay informed, look to credible sources for information about COVID-19 and reject gossip and hype, which only propagate panic and anxiety.
Precautions
Let’s talk about what you can do to prevent getting the virus in the first place.
Clean your hands often for at least 20 seconds each wash. Definitely wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place.

If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Soap and water are better than hand sanitizer if they are available, so please don’t stock pile hand sanitizer.
Clean your home well and regularly.
Whenever possible avoid touching surfaces in public areas that are touched by many, such as doorknobs, handrails, and elevator buttons. Handshakes need to be postponed for now. You can use your sleeve or a tissue when you touch these. Wash your hands right after contact.
Stay away from anyone you know who has a cold or flu symptoms. The World Health Organization recommends at least a 3-foot distance away from someone who is coughing or sneezing.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), you should follow safe respiratory hygiene. When sneezing or coughing, make sure to cover nose and mouth with either a bent elbow or tissue. Throw away all tissues right after use. This is because droplets spread virus by way of spores.
Both the WHO and the PHE advise that if you are sick, stay home. Even when you don’t know if it is Corona or just a cold, it is better to stay home until you feel well again.
Who Is At Highest Risk?
Older adults (Over 60) and those who have existing medical conditions including, lung disease, heart disease and diabetes will suffer the most and have the highest mortality rate if infected.
The director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Dr. Nancy Messonnier says, the highest risk of COVID-19 is for those over age 80 who have other medical conditions.
If you or someone you know fits into a high risk category, stock up on groceries and any required medications, leave space between you and others, avoid crowds and travel, clean your hands and your house often, and stay home as much as possible.
Symptoms

Normal Symptoms:

The following symptoms to look for, which are much like a cold:
• Fever
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
If you have the normal symptoms, call your health care provider for an evaluation.
Emergency warning signs:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
• New confusion or inability to arouse
• Bluish face or lips
If you experience the emergency warning signs, seek medical assistance immediately.
(Source: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/symptoms.html)
Obviously, if you have been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 you should see your doctor or seek emergency services immediately to get tested and do not come into contact with others to prevent spread.
What to do if you have the symptoms
Stay at home for 7 days if you have either:
• a high temperature
• a new continuous cough
This will help to protect others in your community while you are infectious.
Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.
You do not need to contact NHS 111 to tell them you’re staying at home.
We will not be testing people who are self-isolating with mild symptoms.

More Information and Resources
• General hygiene and cleanliness along with correspondence with your health care provider will go a long way.
• Wash your hands for twenty seconds often, especially after touching things many others have touched.
• Clean your house regularly, especially high use surfaces.

Just received if anyone can help

Dear all,
I hope that you are all well.
A little bit of background.
In 2010 I left my hometown following leaving a mentally abusive relationship and moved to Sheffield From this point I built what is now a small registered charity Mums In Need in Sheffield. I have supported over 200 local women.
Initially the support was given by myself in the form of emotional support through an on-line forum from my laptop from my bedroom. Since then it has evolved.
In sept 2016, someone gave me a contact about supporting charities with office space. I called the firm and from Sept 2016 we were granted some free office space which we began to grow and were finally able to register as a charity during this time. These were we were based at Meadowhall business park. They were in the process renovating their offices, and so each time they renovated a block they moved us, around, on average every 6- 8 months.
However, before xmas we were asked to leave as they had paying customers to fill their space. City Taxis came to the rescue and have let us stay in their space but we will once again be in the same position as before unless we are granted a significant amount of funding, so that we can afford to pay rent.
We need your help:
We are a very small charity with a very small team with very little funds. We work really hard to stay a float.
Currently we have a little shop that we once which we raise approx. £200 per month.
We run events and also have 35 charity pots dotted around Sheffield which bring in around £1800 per year.
We also sell clothes on-line but this take a lot of time and we are trying to focus on getting our services up and running again, and in order to do this we need money.
I have sent this email to a few of you in the hope that you can or may know someone /business who maybe able to assist us in finding an alternative space to work from after our contract here runs out here in Feb 2020.
What we are doing:
Two of MIN’s Trustee’s and myself and working very hard to write as many bid applications as possible so that we can afford to continue our work next year. However my biggest concern at the moment is keeping a roof over our heads whilst we try to get the funds in.
We took on a short-term lease in Feb 2019 and this will run out at the end of Jan 2020. We will need a new home from when this agreement runs out.
If you have any ideas or can help in any way then please do let me know.
Thank you
Please share this with anyone whop you think might be able to assist.

Kind Regards
--

Young people suffer more with gift guilt at Christmas
• Pressure of festive giving leaves a quarter of the UK in Financial Trouble.
• 22% of Brits feel pressured to buy more expensive gifts than they feel comfortable spending.
• The Research also uncovered hidden Christmas shopping trends between those of a different age, gender and relationship status.

Christmas is a time of giving, with the UK spending 821 million pounds on Christmas gifts, it is clear that us Brits are extremely generous. However, worryingly one in four Brits feel pressured to spend a lot more than they can afford, sliding them into debt that can last months after the festive season is over. A truly unwanted Christmas gift.

The research conducted by Peachy, surveyed 2002 people’s Christmas shopping habits and attitudes towards money; lifting the lid on the subtle differences between those of a different gender, age and relationship status. Financial woes are expected to affect a quarter (25%) of Britons due to a costly and pressurising Christmas new research suggests. To ease financial worries and enjoy celebrating the festive season Katre Kaarenperk-Vanatoa from Peachy suggests:
“If you haven’t planned your Christmas costs ahead, you’re left to buy all your gifts in one month. In these circumstances, try to shop wisely by sticking to a budget and creating a gift list. Do not compare your gifts to others and remember that it is sentiment that counts not the price. Sometimes, handmade gifts are more greatly appreciated than expensive gadgets.
Ideally, spread the costs of Christmas shopping as much as possible without adding interest to your financial worries in the New Year”

The research also showed that men spend more money than women, however, men believe they spend too much. Despite this, men still continue to shop at a higher budget. Overall the majority of men (66%) felt relaxed when browsing and buying gifts for their loved ones, felt less pressured to buy a more expensive gift and found it less challenging to stick to a set budget compared to women who were significantly more stressed and less money conscious despite on average spending less of their wages on Christmas gifts than men.

40% of 18-24 year old's fretted about what others had bought them for Christmas and felt guilty if others had spent more on gifts than they had. Despite this, other age groups (35-44 and 55+) spent more of their wages on Christmas presents in contrast to 18-24 year old's. Interestingly, 24% of 18-24 year old's admit to poor budgeting at Christmas time despite 29% feeling the financial pinch in January and struggling with finances. Those 55 years old and over old found Christmas shopping too hectic and only 29% wished they could spend more on Christmas gifts.

Single people find it more difficult to budget and felt that they could not spend as much as they would like on presents in comparison to those in relationships. The study also highlighted that married couples do not enjoy spending time with their loved ones as much single individuals, people in relationships and partners that live together over the festive season. Which could perhaps be to do with the contestant chore of fraternising

If nothing changes, by 2025 there will be 5 million people in the UK with Type 2 Diabetes. As it is, 25% of UK Adults are obese and Type 2 Diabetes has risen by 65% in the last 10 years. Young people in Britain are facing mounting debts and unaffordable living expenses, new research from Neyber has found.

The study, carried out among 10,000 UK employees, found that an alarming 70 per cent of people under-34 need to regularly borrow either to pay their monthly bills or deal with day-to-day living expenses.

More worrying, young people are turning to more dangerous forms of lending just to get by. 33 per cent of 25-34 year olds are using credit cards for day-to-day borrowing – higher than any other age group.

The younger you are, the more likely you are to use a payday lender. 8 per cent of 18-24 year olds said they had used one, compared to 4 per cent of 25-44 year olds and 0 per cent of those who were over 65. One in 20 young people have resorted to a loan shark.

One of the reasons for this regular borrowing may be that more young people have jobs with fluctuating income. Sixty eight per cent of 18-24 year olds said their income changes each month. Over a quarter (27 per cent) said their income varies by more than 30 per cent.

The combination of regular borrowing and uncertain incomes has led to many young people feeling stressed. Sixteen per cent of 18-24 year olds said that their finances were out of control, while 20 per cent of 25-34 year olds said they were only just coping.

Even worse, there is evidence that debts are spiralling. The average unsecured debt among 25-44 year olds has risen to GBP £14,794.35 in 2018.
Neyber found that those in the GBP £20,000 - £29,999 earnings bracket – which includes those on an average salary - are spending an average of 37 per cent of their income on debt repayments, including mortgage or rent, per month.

Excluding mortgages and rent, the average amount of unsecured debt employees pay each month is GBP £325.

Heidi Allan, head of employee wellbeing at Neyber said: “Financial worries can lead to sleeplessness, stress and even depression. Clearly our research demonstrates that young people in Britain are not coping and are having to borrow just to get by. More needs to be done to support people, whether that’s providing better financial education in schools, working with employers to offer their young staff financial education or even providing debt support and guidance. If we don’t act now, we will see young people in Britain spiralling into debt they’re unable to repay.”

Phil Andrew, CEO of StepChange added: “There are nine million people who have to use credit to pay for essential expenditure. This includes over one million people using high cost credit to make ends meet. When borrowing becomes a safety net for meeting basic needs the outcomes are often bad. Not financial wellbeing, but the corrosive hardship and harm of problem debt.”

“Employers have a strong interest in improving the financial wellbeing of employees and can be well placed to sell the benefits of seeking advice before problems get out of control. This timely report from Neyber gives a call to action to ensure working life is a source of support rather than worry for young people struggling with their finances.”

Top tips for managing money

Neyber’s Heidi Allan has identified top tips for young people looking to reduce money stress.

1. Use technology to help manage money: contactless pre-pay wrist bands mean that you can’t spend more than you plan to, and will stop you accidentally slipping into your overdraft.

2. Be open and honest and talk about money: it’s all too easy to feel pressured into spending lots of money socialising, but if finances are tight why not suggest dinner parties instead of restaurants or house parties instead of expensive night’s out.

3. Be wary of deals that sound too good to be true: never enter into a financial agreement that you don’t fully understand. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

4. Avoid impulse buys: Set budgets before you hit the shops and always ask yourself if you really need or want the item you are about to buy. Don’t spend on impulse or to ‘keep up with your mates’. If you’re unsure, ask the shop assistant to hold an item for an hour and see if you really still want it later.

5. Educate yourself about different types of debt: Make sure that before you take on any debts - whether that’s credit cards or phone plans or even a mortgage – that you fully understand the terms and conditions. Some debts are better than others, so make you understand what you’ll need to repay and when and that you can really afford the credit.

Neyber’s full report can be found here.
