A gorgeous boutique luxury retreat with beautiful gardens, exceptional service and one of the most amazing breakfasts I've ever had!

🌅 5 nights – The Tubkaak, Krabi 5 ⭐
Right on a stunning beach with breathtaking views of the limestone islands. Peaceful, romantic and just perfect for watching the sunset with a cocktail but close enough to the action in Ao Nang

🌴 5 nights – Paradise Koh Yao Noi 4 ⭐
Barefoot luxury Island life. A little slice of paradise tucked away on a secluded beach. You'll even have your own Plunge Pool Studio for that extra touch of luxury!

In 2002 I swam to get to 'the beach' from the film 'The Beach' and 24 years later I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

What's made me reminisce is that I'm currently planning a Thailand itinerary for clients and would I recommend Maya Bay now- I'm not so sure.

Back in 2002 I was travelling around Thailand for the first time. I was obsessed with the film The Beach- I remember watching it in a little café on Phi Phi when it was still very untouched.

Back then, boats could sail straight into Maya Bay and drop you off on the shore, but on the day we visited, the sea was so rough that our boat couldn't get into the bay.

There was no way I was going to miss seeing the Bay so we got some flippers and swam from the boat to the Cliffside, there were no floating piers then either.

I remember being pushed against the rocks trying to clamber up and cutting my leg in the process making it to rickety cargo rope ladder.

After a walk through some dense jungle, the bay suddenly opened up. No one else there. A serene, peaceful, beautiful paradise and worth the thrilling but terrifying adventure to get there. The backpackers dream!

I thought I was actually in that film at that moment. And it was one of the best experiences in my whole life to date. Actually makes me tear up when I think about it.

Did I get pics. Sadly no. its was disposable cameras back then, and also I don't think that was on my mind when I jumped out of the boat and swam for my life.

Maya Bay is a very different place today. Years of tourism took their toll on the fragile environment, and the bay has since undergone major conservation efforts, with restrictions on boats entering and visitors swimming.

And while those changes are so important for protecting this beautiful place, I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced it the way I did back in 2002.

Some travel memories really do stay with you forever. And that's another reason I will never go back to Maya Bay, I would hate to ruin that beautiful memory.
