A little hello from the studio…

I spent longer than I should have choosing one photograph from the London Autumn Weekend.

It wasn't the National Gallery.
It wasn't Trafalgar Square.
It was a table after lunch.

Three empty glasses. Folded napkins. One chair pushed slightly away.
Nothing spectacular.

Except somebody had been there.

That's the thing about travel photographs.

A landmark can tell you where you went.
The right photograph can make somebody imagine themselves inside the day.

Big up fam!

Monday's list:
Food.
Car seats.
Airport.

Should've been simple.

Tonya and Priscilla are travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi with Njema, Malika and Malik.

Amani and Baraka are at mine.

And tomorrow, Village Air brings its first Nairobi service into Gatwick. 🛫

Everybody's moving.

Which means I'm doing what I always do - working out who's where, who's coming back and whether we've got enough food when they get here.

Then the Founder group starts talking about something from Salvador.

Because apparently one thing at a time was never an option. 😂

🏡 What comes home?

Sometimes it's people.
Sometimes it's the stories they bring with them.
And sometimes something you thought belonged in the past turns up before anybody has worked out what to do with it.

Gentle hearts…

What if the evidence is impossible?

I've been thinking about that question all week.

So I went back to an old photograph from one of our early Friendly Fridays in Leicester.

I've seen it before.
But this time, I saw it differently.

The picture didn't change. What I knew around it did.

I left the whole photograph - and why I went looking at it again - on the Photo Wall tonight.

Meet Caleb Ouma. 🇰🇪🎙️

If you’ve been following When the Village Crosses Paths, you’ve already met him.

In Kisumu, he’s the man who reminded me:
“They have not stopped. Only the speakers have.”

Community-radio producer. Oral-history editor. And somebody who still arrives early to lend a hand.

People like Caleb give the Village its life.

And through our Founding Character Programme, you could help inspire somebody we haven’t met yet.

During Autumn Membership, new Members can have the opportunity to inspire a recurring character who enters the Global Village Stories Universe.

Loving Village…

For weeks, finding Kevin seemed to mean one thing:

Bring him back.

But people are not lost objects.
And home is not somewhere another person can return them by force.

Kevin is alive. He is physically safe. The truth is also more difficult than relief alone.

He made choices.
People were hurt.
His family was frightened.

Achieng can name that harm and still open her arms.

The Village can offer an honest door. It cannot drag somebody through it.

Found is not home.
Found is not healed.
Found is not forgiven.

Found means the truth has acquired a living face.

Blessing Family…

Ten years ago, during one of the Kisumu Tribal Lounge’s first third-Friday gatherings, the speakers stopped working.

The people did not.

The drummer kept playing.
The singers carried the melody.
The room rebuilt the song for itself.

They have not stopped. Only the speakers have.

Ten years later, Kisumu is preparing for another third Friday.

The tablecloths are open.
The musicians are testing the performance area.
The first Members are beginning to arrive.

But in Salvador, something has appeared that does not belong to the preparations.
A MiniDV cassette.

Beneath the voice on the recording, Zaire hears a radio presenter describing an album as new.

The album came later.
His death came first..

Didn’t he die?

A little hello from the studio…

Beautiful design can lie accidentally.

I noticed that while reviewing the London Autumn Weekend. St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey had been placed beneath one shared heading - as though they offered the same kind of access.

They do not.

🕍 St Paul’s Cathedral offers a Private Access Experience.

🏙️ Westminster Abbey is encountered during the London City Walking Tour alongside the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Parliament and Big Ben.

Both experiences belong to the same Saturday journey. That does not make them interchangeable.

I carried that thought with me to Salvador, where two arches I had designed for an unfinished installation looked perfect together on paper.

The Village had other ideas.

One arch worked with the space.
The other interrupted what the courtyard had become.

Beautiful.
Intentional.
Completely wrong.

Sometimes finishing begins by noticing what does not belong.

Peace, Family 👁️✨

Some journeys are remembered by their destination.
Others are remembered by the spaces between.

This week, Elias, Maya and Zaire leave Leicester together - but they are not following the same internal journey.

Zaire has performers and musicians waiting in Salvador.
Maya has an unfinished installation.
Elias has become absorbed by a fictional murder.

Their route takes them from Leicester to Heathrow and on to Lisbon, where one question begins following Elias more closely than the journey itself:

🗺️ When does the game begin?

When the organisers announce it?
When the first clue appears?
Or when somebody decides that the thing in front of them must mean something?

Something I saw in London today made me think I finally know how I'd answer it.

I left the photograph - and the story behind it - on the Photo Wall tonight.

If you've been following When the Village Crosses Paths, you've already met her.

But there's another story behind Diane.

Her character was inspired by Denese, a real Tribe Member.

That's part of the idea behind our Founding Character Programme.
