If you think Montenegro is just about Kotor and its coast, you've got a lot to learn.

There is so much more to explore in what is still one of Europe's youngest countries — happy 20th birthday, Montenegro 🎂 — its most mountainous, and possibly its wildest too.

Read our guide to Montenegro 20 years on from independence, and the places and landscapes most visitors miss. 🔗

We’ve just published our guide to wild swimming in Albania — 9 of our favourite spots, from glacial mountain lakes and wild rivers like the Vjosa, to thermal hot springs and hidden coves along the Albanian Riviera.

These are places we return to regularly on our Albania trips, and they’re part of what makes the country one of Europe’s most varied and underrated destinations for swimmers.

20 years of Montenegrin independence this year, and we think it's time to show off our favourite places beyond the coast. It's not all about Kotor(stunning, but crowded in summer). There's another Montenegro: kayaking on Lake Skadar, the largest freshwater lake in southern Europe. Hiking the Via Dinarica through the Accursed Mountains. Visiting a monastery island where nuns make pomegranate wine. Spotting flamingos at the Ulcinj Saltpans. Watching Dalmatian pelicans lift off the water at dawn.
We've been here for 18 years and Montenegro still surprises us. Come and see why!

We've done it again 🎉

Thank you for the brilliant reviews that place our trips among the top 10% of TripAdvisor's things to do worldwide once again this year.

This award is based entirely on genuine feedback from our guests, so it has extra special meaning for a small, determinedly different travel company like us.

From the very beginning, we've chosen to focus on the quieter corners of the Balkans away from mass tourism, rich in nature, character and tradition, with local people at the heart of every experience. We wanted to inspire our guests to fall for the Balkans we know and love — and it's working.

A huge thanks goes to our brilliant local partners, from Montenegro and Albania, to Serbia, Bosnia and beyond — the guides, the hosts, the friends — who pour so much energy and enthusiasm into every trip. 🙏

Europe's wildest corner is waiting — scroll to the comments for links to our website and our TripAdvisor page. We'd love for you to join us. 🏔️🌊🌿

Have you ever heard of Spomeniks? 🤔

Scattered across the mountains and national parks of the former Yugoslavia are hundreds of extraordinary brutalist monuments; giant abstract sculptures built in the 60s, 70s and 80s to commemorate the battles of WWII.

They look like nothing else on Earth. Giant drills, clenched fists, stone flowers, alien observatories, sweeping concrete wings. Each one tells a different story about the war, and about then Yugoslavia.

We've just written a complete guide to the best ones, including hiking trails to reach them, and a bit of history behind each one. Countries covered: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia and Kosovo.

If you love architecture, history, or just finding places well off the beaten track, this one's for you 👇

Have you ever tasted butter that’s homemade? 🧈

It’s just one of the extraordinary foodie delights our guests have savoured this week on our Albania Food and Culture Tour. And today they’re learning how to make delicious traditional dishes like ‘fergese’ in Berat, a UNESCO heritage site that feels straight out of a fantasy film.

Albania is a country going places when it comes to its cuisine. From high-end restaurants founded by innovative chefs - the equal of any in Europe - to home-grown, homemade dishes full of flavour in the mountains, a visit here will truly tantalise your tastebuds. We'll also help you work up your appetite by taking you to chase waterfalls, explore hidden fortresses, castles and more – all locally-led for a deeper, richer experience.

Croatia, but cheaper? This BBC headline caught a lot of attention this week, and we're really happy to see Montenegro winning more hearts 💛

But… no, Montenegro isn’t Croatia. And whether it’s “cheaper” really depends on where you go, and who you book with (hint: our adventure holidays there are better value than what's quoted in the article — and consistently 5⭐️).

So why isn’t Montenegro just a cheaper Croatia, and in many ways, better for it?

🏔️ First: it's the landscape. Swap Croatia’s long coastline and islands for a country dominated by mountains, canyons, rivers and lakes. Montenegro isn't just a beach break; it's one big playground for outdoor adventure lovers.

🧭 Second: the culture and customs. While Croatia leans west, Montenegro has a more eastern feel, shaped by centuries under the Ottoman Empire. You'll hear it in the music, taste it in the food, and see it in the architecture — from Ottoman bridges and Podgorica’s clock tower to the historic mosques of Stari Bar — as well as in many everyday customs and traditions.

🦢 Third: Sorry Croatia… you don’t have Dalmatian pelicans 😉

Quirky, wild, and still wonderfully under the radar in places, Montenegro is a brilliant choice for your 2026 escape.

Our first guests of 2026 have left Montenegro after a “fantastic week” — their words, not ours. 😀

It was a joy to introduce our small group (all families) to a side of Montenegro most never get to see. One where you can still escape the crowds to kayak across a glassy lake 🛶, not another soul in sight, meet monks and nuns, abseil down gushing waterfalls, learn bushcraft with expert local instructors, and hike forest trails to go wild swimming in natural pools (wetsuits very much required at this time of year! 💦 ).

Thank you to the Minto and Richard families for trusting us with your Easter adventures and kicking off our 16th season of trips in this beautiful corner of Europe.

If you’d like to follow in their footsteps, visit the link in the comments or send us a message. 🌿

In the Balkans, souvenirs are a cut above the usual. We're talking hand-woven kilims, socks knitted in mountain villages, copper coffee pots hand-hammered in Sarajevo's bazaar, jars of smoky homemade ajvar that taste like nothing you'll find in a supermarket. No tourist tat - these are artisan items we genuinely love to gift to family and friends.

👉 Read our full guide to the top 10 artisan crafts & souvenirs to buy in the Balkans: https://undiscoveredbalkans.com/what-to-buy-when-you-visit-the-balkans/

Plus, you leave a positive impact: support local craftspeople as part of being a conscientious traveller in Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo and North Macedonia.
