Tess Greenham talks to about her career journey and all things music and mastering in their lastest get to know >>
“I’ve pretty much been around mastering my whole life – my dad, John Greenham, has been a mastering engineer for as long as I can remember.
I always saw it as this dark and mysterious art that was far too complex for me to ever understand. But I loved going with him to the studios he worked at and attempting to understand what all the equipment did.
He used to work at this studio called The Annex in Menlo Park, CA. Every time I went I never wanted to leave. I just always loved being in studios.
A few years back I was doing PR and social media in the music industry, but I didn’t really feel that was my calling. I wanted to be involved more in the creative process.
Right around the end of 2019 I left that job and started working for my dad at Clearlight Mastering. I started out helping more on the management side, and the idea was for me to go out to shows to meet people and bring more work in. Then COVID happened! So my role transitioned to being a studio assistant.
There are a lot of responsibilities that come with being a studio assistant. But my main job during that time really was to sit and listen. Listen to the minor adjustments John was making on the analog gear and how those tiny adjustments changed the entire song. It’s magic and there’s nothing quite like it.
My initial impression wasn’t wrong – it is a mysterious dark art! I fell in love. About a year ago I started mastering songs on my own, and now I’m just trying to build my client list and learn as much as I can about working on every kind of music possible!
I can’t imagine doing anything else at this point.”
