Random photo of my coach window?
No. Not random.
It was taken on or around this day (26th August) in 1976. Recording the first rain for 45 days. Ending the longest, driest heatwave to hit Britain in 250 years. 9 weeks of it. Periods when the temperature was over 30C (86F) for up to 16 days in a row. Reaching a record 35.9C (96.6F) on 3 July.
No air-conditioning in our coaches (or indeed anywhere, including posh hotels).
We carried uncomfortable tourists from air-conditioned America in the stifling heat.
Now that is what I call a heat wave.

An exclusive viewing of Heiress: An exhibition of Sargent’s American Portraits in Kenwood was arranged for Blue Badge Tourist guides. It was amazing.
Remarkable life stories of 16 American women who married into the British aristocracy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These women were lumped together by elements of the British and American press under the dismissively reductive label ‘dollar princesses’, yet each made an extraordinary impact in their adopted country.
Thank you to the resident curator Ella Letort for bringing the portraits to life and also to Mark King for making it happen.

VE Day.
Bletchley Park intercept of the surrender conditions.
This is a six-page W/T (wireless traffic) Red Form contains the terms of Germany’s surrender to the Allies. The official text of the message was sent to the remnants of the N**i government by radio. It was taken down on 7 May 1945 by a Wireless Intercept Operator who allegedly picked up the message while on ‘search’ duty.

Durdle Door and beach (In February). A natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Does it look like a dinosaur having a drink? You might have to squint a bit.

Stonehenge in the snow. January 2010.
Heavy snow the night before and no one in their right mind was driving on that day. But no one has ever accused me of being in my right mind. Stonehenge was completely closed but the road ran right next to the Heel Stone in those days. So we parked on side of the road and took pictures through the fence. Can’t do that now of course because that road is now closed.

34°C (93°F) today. A rare opportunity to wear my best hat, from Lock & Co. (where else 😌). The oldest hat shop in the world, situated in the area of St James’s to cater for the fashionable upper classes. They are known for their innovative and pioneering style, including the Coke hat, designed for game keepers and made famous by Charlie Chaplin. It is better known as the Bowler hat and associated with City gents. A long line of discerning patrons includes Admiral Lord Nelson, Beau Brummell, Oscar Wilde, Douglas Fairbanks Junior, Charlie Chaplin, Jacqueline Kennedy and royalty (and me). The staff are welcoming and most helpful.

The National memorial Arboretum, near Birmingham covers 150 acres and has over 330 memorials.
It is a living tribute and a permanent acknowledgement of the personal sacrifices made by the armed
forces and civilian services of this country. The memorials are mainly military, but also the Police,
Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services and other significant charities.
The central Armed Forces Memorial (featured here), dedicated in the presence of Her Majesty the
Queen in 2007 has on its curved walls over 16,000 names of those who have been killed while on
duty since the second World war.
The gap in the wall allows a shaft of sunlight to pe*****te to the heart of the Memorial onto the
central bronze wreath on the 11th November each year in recognition of the importance of Armistice
Day.
When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.

May Day is a day of celebrations, rituals and rejoicing in towns and villages throughout the land. Fertility and re-birth. Summer is a coming in (and Winter’s gone away-o). Maypoles, parades with milkmaids and chimney sweeps, green men, hobby horses. Garlands of greenery and spring flowers. And May Queens, who perhaps arose at the break of day to wash their faces in the morning dew to make themselves (even more) beautiful.
Morris Dancers, with their bells, sticks, handkerchiefs, clogs and ribbons, have performed at seasonal festivals and holidays since at least the 15th century - to banish the dark of winter, celebrate the warmth and fertility of summer, and bring in autumn's harvest. With a bit of luck you might see some yourself on your next journey through England. These photographs were taken in Stratford upon Avon, Salisbury, Stow on the Wold and at Stonehenge.
