We adore this video about Gorongosa’s Pangolin Team. What an inspirational and hopeful insight into the passion and commitment shown by conservation teams in Africa.

Gorongosa National Park is in the Great Rift Valley, Mozambique and has everything from forest to savannah to wetlands, lakes, waterfalls and much more. We’ll be there in October with to do a deep dive into this newly emerging destination.

The amazing conservation efforts in this park are seeing a year on year increase in animal densities and they are well on their way to reaching the same denisities the area was famous for in the 60s. What a triumph!

A rainy day in the bush doesn’t always go to waste. We headed out early as usual to find this male lion stalking some zebra, taking advantage of the fact the zebra all like to put their backs to the rain - a very risky strategy just to avoid getting wet if you ask us.

This male lion eventually gave up as one zebra caught wind of him and although they didn’t run he knew they were even more alert and he didn’t stand a chance.

Male lions are actually very good hunters but simply choose not to when the females in their pride do it for them - this lone male lion was known in the area and did not yet have a pride of his own so was forced to feed himself (how terrible!).

We say quietly, all alone, as this female leopard meandered through the long grass on her way for a drink after a succesful night feeding on impala she had killed for her and her sub adult cub the night before.

It was just before sunrise in the Okavango Delta and the birds were waking up with vigor and all else was still around us. This leopard was very relaxed, walking close to the vehicle and savouring her time out in the open without threat of being spotted.

We know the very best spots in Africa for seeing leopard - although we can never guarantee what nature will do we can give you the very best chance of having moments like this on your safari.

Watch this wonderfully brave African Wild Cat slowly but surely push this jackal away from the area - she most likely had kittens hiding in the long grass. We love the way she makes herself as big as possible and is so silent on her paws that the jackal didn’t even know she was there until she was very close to him.

This was filmed this week from Nkasa Linyanti, Natural Selection’s new property in the Caprivi Strip, Namibia. This area is an area of true Wilderness and is extremely remote - but also borders Botswana and is part of the Okavango ecosystem.

How Do Tour Operators Work?

A little more information on how we at The Luxury Safari Co work as a tour operator :

~ We have unrivalled first hand knowledge of everywhere we sell built over thousands of hours spent in the bush.

~ We take our commission from the camps, not from you - so our unrivalled knowledge and lightning quick planning is free to you.

~ We always sell objectively, we do not accept deals from camps and lodges for extra commission if we push them harder - so when we plan it’s always with what will suit you best in mind.

~ We offer support before and during your trip which you cannot get when booking direct.

~ It costs the same, if not a little more, when booking your luxury safari direct with the properties.

~ Due to complicated logistics of planning a safari often camps and lodges actually only work with operators rather than taking direct bookings.

~ We have very long standing friendships with all our camps and lodges meaning that you get the best guides in camp, best rooms and best treatment.

It’s always an obvious choice to book your luxury safari through a tour operator…

Why Book Your Safari Well in Advance?

We love a last minute safari, we love finding solutions for those that want to go to Africa at the drop of a hat - however if you really want to have the pick of the bunch you must book early. We advise over a year in advance to get the most out of your safari planning process.

Not only will you then be able to plan your safari with us in detail and look at lots of options - but we’ll also be able to secure the private vehicle for you, which most camps only have one of. The private vehicle allows you so much more flexibility than sharing with others and enhances your experience more than almost anything else.

We even recommend staying somewhere slightly more rustic but booking the private vehicle - if the budget is tight. It really is the key to a good safari.

Walk with us through Ikuka Safari Camp in , . This is a perfectly formed safari camp in our opinion - small, intimate, luxurious with a perfect blend of indoor outdoor living. The rooms are huge with the most dramatic views in all of Ruaha. During the day your room is opened up to promote the feeling of being outside, even when you’re lying on your bed. At night you’re then tucked safely in your cosy cocoon as the beautiful African sounds envelop you.

Ikuka is owner run which is becoming rarer amongst the safari camps nowadays - you can feel the warmth and love of the family who own Ikuka when you’re in the camp, simply it feels like home.

The guiding team here is second to none and when you combine that with the amazing wildlife viewing in Ruaha, complete with a lack of over crowding and stunning scenery - this will always be one of our favourite camps in Tanzania.

What Makes a Good Safari Guide?

A hot topic in the safari industry is what makes an exceptional guide. We feel he/she (despite the industry still being dominated by the boys, there are some exceptional female guides at the top of their game across Africa) has to be able to communicate the amazing knowledge they have accrued on Africa’s wildlife and flora in a way that is engaging for everyone.

Being fed fact after fact on Africa’s species in a monotone on a slow bumpy vehicle is guaranteed to allow that early morning to catch up with you and you’ll soon be dozing on the vehicle rather than chatting freely with your safari guide.

We only work with camps with exceptional guides - we know, we’ve met them and been out in the bush with them ourselves. Guides have to be psychologists, bar tenders, hosts and much more - and all of this has to combine with an exceptional knowledge of everything from mammals to plants.

We are fortunate to have built friendships with some of Africa’s top guides and these are the amazing people who will be guiding you on your safaris.

The magic of the Delta is witnessing first hand how the wildlife has adapted to the year round water in this incredible area - Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Lions here are bigger and stronger than other parts of Africa due to the necessity to live and hunt in flooded areas, the power they possess is humbling to witness.

The Flood this year is predicted to be larger than usual and will combine with seasonal waters which are also higher than usual - this will result in wildlife being pushed out of commonly wildlife dense areas as although they have adapted to living alongside water, when a whole area is submerged they move.

We’re fully abreast of all wildlife movements in Botswana and the rest of Africa, always keeping up to date with unusual weather patterns which mean wildlife movements also change.
