How to not look like a tourist in Greece π
If you are planning a trip to Greece for your 2026 European summer vacation, here are 9 essential insider travel tips to help you skip the tourist traps, master the local etiquette, and experience the Mediterranean like a true local:
1οΈβ£ Eat on Greek time.
Lunch happens around 2:30β4:00 PM. Dinner starts at 9:00 PM (at the absolute earliest). If youβre sitting down for dinner at 6:30 PM, youβre only eating with other tourists.
2οΈβ£ Stop taking shots of Ouzo.
Ouzo is not tequila. It is meant to be sipped slowly, usually mixed with ice or water, and always accompanied by food (meze). Taking it as a quick shot is an instant tourist flag.
3οΈβ£ Don't try to hail a street taxi.
Islands like Mykonos or Santorini only have a few dozen taxis for thousands of visitors. Trying to wave one down on the street is a rookie mistake. Always pre-book a private transfer or have your hotel arrange a driver in advance.
4οΈβ£ Your coffee order matters.
If itβs over 25Β°C, hot coffee is out. Order a Freddo Espresso (iced black) or Freddo Cappuccino (iced with cold foam). Long, customized, syrupy latte orders don't fit the island rhythm.
5οΈβ£ Ditch the high heels.
The beautiful island cobblestones (kalderimia) are ruthless. You will ruin your shoes and your ankles. Elegant flats or high-quality leather sandals are what the locals wear.
6οΈβ£ No lettuce in the Greek Salad.
A traditional Horiatiki salad is tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, and a massive slab of feta drizzled with olive oil. If you ask for mixed greens, everyone knows.
7οΈβ£ You have to ask for the bill.
Greek hospitality means the table is yours for the night. The waiter will never bring the check to rush you out. When you're ready to leave, you have to explicitly ask for it.
8οΈβ£ Food is meant to be shared.
Tourists will order "one main dish per person." Greeks order for the middle of the table. The local way is to order a variety of mezedes (appetizers) and a few mains, and everyone shares everything. Itβs a communal experience, not an individual one.
9οΈβ£ Embrace "Siga Siga."
It means "slowly, slowly." Rushing through narrow streets, stressing over a minute-by-minute itinerary, or acting impatient at a taverna completely breaks the vibe.
