Why stay in Baita 1697 and ski the Milky Way:
- The skiing: 400km+ of pistes, spread across multiple mountains, with different aspects but all with spectacular views. Vertiginous descents, tree-lined corduroy pistes, off-piste for the most accidental to the most intrepid: all at a high altitude that keeps the snow conditions good throughout the season
- The vast choice: Anfiteatro or Sestriere or Sauze d’Oulx or Sansicario or Claviere or Montgenevre… or all of them!
- The off-piste: the area has some of the finest off-piste accessible from groomed slopes, and plenty of peaks to skin up; it is also one of the few places that can offer heli-skiing, just five minutes from Baita
- The lift lines: there really aren’t many… That is one of the comments we hear again and again from guests. Less time queueing means more time skiing, or eating…
- The food: on or away from the pistes, Italian mountain food is hands-down the best there is, from steaming bowls of polenta topped with local melted cheese to sticky pork ribs to hearty broths to pan-fried local mountain trout to messy but delicious mixes of potatoes, cured meats and cheese; from quick-and-dirty to an extended, refined-white-linen experience. Food is religion in Italy, and it shows
- The drink: a local artisanal beer to slake the pressing thirst at lunch, followed by a bottle of Barbaresco that won’t cost the earth; keeping the more serious Barolo for dinner, to be followed up by digestivi made locally from hand-picked mountain flowers (and strong alcohol)
- The coffee… no dishwater imitation of an espresso, no cafe-au-lait pretence at a cappuccino, just the real thing
- The simplicity: get up and dressed, breakfast awaits downstairs, then 3 minutes’ walk to the cable car and away; and when you are done, ski back practically to the front door
- The practicality: Turin airport is less than 90 minutes’ drive, with rarely a passport line in sight and efficient baggage-handling - straight through to your waiting car
- The little things: the beautiful hot tub on the roof terrace; the incredible water pressure in the showers; the bright airiness of the top-floor seating area or the fascination of the ever-extending stone vaults that make up the sitting room ceiling; the endless supply of delectable, hand-made nibbles to accompany pre-dinner drinks; the twinkle-eyed smiles of Bianca and Pietro, who become everybody’s friends and whom many children are sad to leave
The non-downhill alternatives: dog-sledding and ice-skating, snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing, and for the thrill-seekers, ice-karting...
There is a reason why many guests return to Baita 1697 in subsequent years - they love it.
